Liam Hemsworth on Miley Cyrus: ‘It was real’

MANILA, Philippines – Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth split in 2013, and have since gone their separate ways, with both their careers on the rise. Given their differences today, Men’s Fitness magazine asked Liam about his former relationship and what he thinks about it today.

Liam opened up about ex-fiancee Miley in the November issue of Men’s Fitness.

Given the different directions their lives have taken since their split, the magazine asked Liam if he felt he “dodged a bullet.”

Liam answered, “You fall in love with who you fall in love with; you can never choose. I guess some people just come with a little more baggage.”

He followed it up by saying that his 5-year relationship with Miley was definitely more than just a fling. “We were together 5 years, so I don’t think those feelings will ever change. And that’s good because that proves to me that it was real. It wasn’t just a fling. It really was an important part of my life and always will be.”

“She’s a free spirit. I think she’ll always surprise people with what she does, but she’s not a malicious person in any way,” he added.

Miley and Liam started dating in 2009, after meeting on the set of The Last Song. They were engaged in 2012, but broke the engagement in 2013.

Since then, Miley’s career and “approach to celebrity,” as Men’s Fitness put it, has taken on a different direction.

After switching out her long brown hair for a short blonde pixie cut in 2012, Miley released Bangerz in 2013, and then made headlines following a controversial performance at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs).

She recently hosted the 2015 VMAs, making several outrageous costume changes.

Miley released a new album, Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz, in August, in collaboration with The Flaming Lips. She and the band are planning to have a nude concert for a music video.

Miley also started the Happy Hippie Foundation, whose mission is to “rally young people to fight injustice facing homeless youth, LGBT youth and other vulnerable populations,” according to its website.

Liam, on the other hand, has been busy filming for the Hunger Games franchise, among other movie projects. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2 is set to hit theaters in November.
