Motive behind death of Pastillas Girl’s mom may be ‘personal’
Police say they have witnesses to support this theory

MANILA, Philippines – Police say the motive behind the death of Maria Teresa Santos Hernandez, mother of Pastillas Girl (Angelica Jane Yap), may be personal.

Teresa was shot on Sunday, November 29, while eating at a restaurant in Barangay 131 in Caloocan with one of her daughters. She was rushed to the hospital but died at 12:45 am on Monday, November 30.

Teresa, 43, was a kagawad of Barangay 127 in Caloocan. According to Senior Superintendent Bart Bustamante, Teresa preferred to use her maiden name, rather than Maria Teresa Santos Hernandez-Yap.

The police have yet to name an official suspect and motive for her death, but on December 1, Bustamante told Rappler that the motive was probably personal.

“May mga testigo na rin na lumalabas na magpapatibay sa isang theory namin na the motive was really personal circumstances.” (There are witnesses who have come out, strengthening one of our theories that the motive was really personal circumstances.)

Inquirer reported that an unnamed relative of Teresa asked the police to look into a “Polo” and Alfamil Yap, the victim’s ex-boyfriends, and Andrea, Alfamil’s current partner.

When Rappler asked if it were true that Teresa was receiving death threats, Bustamante said, “To the effect, kasi natukoy namin yung isang konfidante niya, na kaibigan niya, na babae din, na sinasabihan siya sa mga pangyayari ng buhay ni Kagawad.”

(To the effect, because we were able to identify one of her confidantes, her friend, who is also a girl, who she shared events in her life to.)

In the interview with Rappler, Bustamante added that they would have the computerized facial composite (CFC) of the suspect soon.

The CFC is based on the description of witnesses and the CCTV footage that was recovered. “So base doon sa description [ng mga kaptibahay] na narinig ng imbestigador… lumalabas na isang tao lang. At ng surveillance, isang tao lang rin yung bumira, yung bumaril. So meron naman tayong CCTV copy, so malabo, pero based on that CCTV, tsaka sa description, we can come up with … yung medyo maganda o close to reality na picture ng assassin.”

(So based on the description [of the neighbors] that the investigator heard… it looks like it’s just one person. And the surveillance shows it was just one person who fired, who shot her. So we have the CCTV copy, so it’s blurry, but based on that CCTV and on the description, we can come up with a nice or close picture of the assassin.)

The official police report said that the suspect was around 5’4″ in height, and wore a baseball cap and denim jacket. The suspect fled on a motorcycle.

The police report also stated they are currently examining the bullet and cartridge case that were recovered as evidence.

Bustamante also told Rappler that they are inviting Teresa’s close relatives and friends to shed light on the incident.

Teresa’s daughter, Angelica, was known for her viral video where she explained how to make pastillas (soft milk candy) while expressing her bitterness of her ex-boyfriend.

It’s Showtime then created a dating game segment, “Nasaan Ka Mr Pastillas?” to help Angelica find her Mr Right. Teresa has sometimes also appeared on the show to support her daughter.

Angelica told ABS-CBN that she was in the middle of a music video shoot when she heard the news of the shooting. She rushed to the hospital where Teresa was being treated, but her mom was already brain dead by the time she arrived. “Brain dead lang pero humihinga pa. Kinausap ko siya. Nagre-respond pa siya. ‘Yung mga heavy breathing niya, alam ko naririnig niya ako,” said Angelica.

(She was just brain dead but still breathing. I spoke to her. She was still responding. Because of her heavy breathing, I knew she could hear me.)

In the same news report, when asked about what she told her mom in the hospital, Angelica said: “To be honest, [hindi ko alam] kung hihilingin mo na sana lumaban ka or kung nahihirapan siya, bumitiw na. Ang hirap. Kasi totoo naman na Diyos lang ang may decision noon. Wala akong ibang nasabi kundi mahal ko siya at sorry.”

(To be honest, [I didn’t know] if I should ask her to fight or if she’s already having a hard time, tell her to let go. It’s so hard, because it’s true that only God can make that decision. I didn’t say anything other than I love her and I’m sorry.)

Angelica also posted this message and photo of her mother on social media:

Mahal na mahal na mahal kita.
