Joseph Gordon-Levitt drops out of Neil Gaiman’s ‘Sandman’ film
The actor cites creative differences with New Line Cinema, the studio in charge of the film adaptation

MANILA, Philippines – Actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt dropped out of the film adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s graphic novel series, The Sandman, which he had been developing since 2013 as producer.

Gordon-Levitt announced his decision on his official Facebook page, saying that he and the film’s production outfit New Line Cinema were in disagreement about the direction of the project.

He wrote, “We started in on the ambitious task of adapting one of the most beloved and boundary-pushing titles in the world of comics. I was pleased with the progress we were making, even though we still had quite a ways to go.”

“A few months ago, I came to realize that the folks at New Line and I just don’t see eye to eye on what makes Sandman special, and what a film adaptation could/should be. So unfortunately, I decided to remove myself from the project.”

Gordon-Levitt’s decision to depart the project, he said, was prompted by the change of guard from Warner Bros to its sister company, New Line.

A long-running series in the ’90s, Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman follows the adventures of Morpheus/Dream, the Lord of Dreams. He is one among a motley group of siblings, The Endless, who have been around since the beginning of time: Destiny, Death, Desire, Despair, Delirium, and Destruction. Their roles and realms correspond to their names.

The film is still currently in development at New Line, with Eric Heisserer (known for The Nightmare on Elm Street, The Thing) recently announced as the new screenwriter.  – Rappler.com
