Who really is Captain America's BFF – Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, or Sam Wilson/Falcon? Stars of 'Captain America: Civil War' weigh in

SINGAPORE – Who is really Captain America/Steve Rogers’ greatest love? Fans know of course that his first love is the feisty, whip-smart Peggy Carter. But when Cap wakes up decades later after time spent in suspended animation, he faces a very different world from the reality he knew in wartime 1940s.

But aside from his romantic interest in Peggy, Cap (played by Chris Evans) truly values friendship and loyalty – and these are tested in Captain America: Civil War, where he faces off against Iron Man and his team in a bid to protect old friend Bucky Barnes (played by Sebastian Stan), a prisoner of war who was brainwashed and turned into the deadly assassin, the Winter Soldier.

Framed for a major tragedy, Bucky teams up with Cap to find out the truth. Joining #TeamCap is Sam Wilson, aka The Falcon (played by Anthony Mackie), Cap’s dependable friend who is with him all the way.

This is what’s been called the central “bromance” in the film – the importance of Cap’s friends and the role they play in his life.

Amid all the Avengers drama, characters are further forced to take sides when the government proposes a plan to regulate individuals with superhuman abilities – including the Avengers – something Cap just can’t get on board with, though Iron Man supports it. Civil War delivers on all the high-octane action and pure fun that Marvel movies are known to deliver. But it really is, as the actors and directors say, “family versus family,” and a meeting of friends old and new – and that makes for a lot of drama.

Fans and media at the Civil War Singapore premiere asked Chris, Anthony, and Sebastian about who really was Cap’s BFF or “greatest love.” (WATCH: Here’s #TeamCap’s answer to #TeamIronMan’s Eiffel Tower stunt)

“Bucky’s the friend you have in your youth, but Falcon’s the friend that Cap chose once Cap knew who he was, where he was, he actually,” reflected Chris. “We all can relate to this. We all have friends from our youth that were just our friend because we were young, and we didn’t know any better. And then when you get older you pick your friends because you know who you are a little bit more. And that’s who Falcon is.”

Asked whether Falcon would be a contender to be Cap’s ultimate BFF, Anthony had this to say: “No, I’ll be a contender for getting rid of Bucky.”

The stars are adept at teasing the conflict in the film and bringing snippets of it to real life. At the blue carpet premiere for Civil War, a young fan asked Sebastian if he was really Cap’s best friend – to which he replied yes, plus a hug for Chris.

On a more serious note, Cap’s only too happy to have buddies he can depend on today – even if one is only just beginning to come around.

“I love seeing the evolution of Steve and Sam, I love seeing the evolution of Steve and Bucky, I think these are big things in Steve’s life. I think Steve’s always been lacking in terms of a sense of home,” Chris explained.

“I think that’s what Steve’s been looking for ever since he woke up 70 years later. And I think the hunt for the reconnection with Bucky, and the cultivation and development of his current relationship with Sam, has been his key priorities. So watching those two developments emerge and actually collide, is not only satisfying but really humorous. They do a really good job of watching the old and the new bump against one another.”

Off-screen, the friendship is real. Chris noted that he’s worked with Sebastian since they made the first Captain America film, released back in 2011. Chris and Anthony have actually done two movies together not related to their Marvel roles – What’s Your Number? (2011) and Playing It Cool (2014). And Sebastian and Anthony actually are great friends in real life – director Joe Russo told us that their rapport was so great that it influenced some of the banter you see on-screen. The stars have been going around the world to promote their different sides – #TeamCap and #TeamIronMan, and loyal as ever to Team Cap, Anthony says he’s firmly on Cap’s side – though he does have something to say about what makes Tony Stark awesome compared to a certain “billionaire playboy, who has wealthy parents, who is a philanthropist, and a huge businessman.”
