Award-winning teen star Therese Malvar talks acting; shares John Lloyd Cruz, Sid Lucero’s advice
Teri talks about what projects she would like to do and acting in 'Hamog'

MANILA, Philippines – Teen actress Therese “Teri” Malvar said that when she found out she won the Best Actress award at the 2016 Moscow International Film Festival, it took some time before it sunk in.

I received the news nung nasa Vancouver po ako, nasa layover. Nagtampo ako noon kasi gusto ko [nang] matulog. So hindi pa po nagpoprocess lahat na nanalo ako sa Moscow,” she told reporters during the party for cast and crew of the movie Hamog (Haze).

(I received the news when I was in Vancouver during a layover. I was grumpy because I just wanted to sleep. So I did not process it immediately that we had won in Moscow.)

At that time of the news, the 15-year-old was in New York to attend the New York Asian Film Festival, where she was given the Rising Star Asia Award.

According to Teri, it was her mom who had first jubilantly reacted to the news of her win in Moscow. “Yung mom ko na po yung sumigaw sa (My mom was the first one to shout in the) airport, in public,” she shared.

The staff at the Asian Film Festival also found out about the good news, and the manager of the hotel she was staying in even treated her to french fries and a milkshake.

In New York, she was able to meet up with John Lloyd Cruz and Sid Lucero, who were also at the event. John Lloyd was also one of the 3 Star Asia honorees.

John Lloyd and Sid: ‘Be yourself’

Teri said John Lloyd and Sid were very nice to her and not only congratulated her, but even gave her some advice about working in the industry.

Nagulat po ako kay Sid Lucero. Kasi nung una kaming nagkita, which is sa stage, sabi ni Sid ‘Wow! The Therese Malvar.’ Eh, the Sid Lucero po siya. I mean, alam niya po yung mga awards ko po… and si John Lloyd Cruz po, sobrang bait po nila and very fun to be with,” she said.

(I was really surprised with Sid Lucero. Because the first time we saw each other, which was on stage Sid said, ‘Wow! The Therese Malvar.’ Eh, he was the Sid Lucero. I mean he knows about my awards and all… and John Lloyd Cruz was also very nice and they were fun to be with.)

When asked what was the advice that the two actors gave her, Teri said: Sabi nila (They said) have a strong foundation or base pagdating sa showbiz, kasi may mga iba na (because when it comes to showbiz, there other people like) staff or everything na (who) will let you down, so have a strong character or be strong yourself – have respect for yourself.

“They also said choose your characters well, and hopefully, as the years go by, parang maging ganito pa din yung acting ko po (they hope my acting would still be like this) – very raw, very natural,” she shared.

Aside from the Rising Star Award and Best Actress in Moscow, Teri also won the Outstanding Artistic Achievement Golden Goblet Award at the 2016 Shanghai International Festival.

Hamog and future roles

In Hamog, Teri plays Jinky, a street kid experiencing the hardships of life. According to Teri, Jinky is definitely a difficult role to play at her age.

Sobrang bigat niya para sa akin kasi ibang-iba siya. Iba si Jinky, iba si Therese, so may mga eksena na nahihiya po akong gawin, pero I try,” Teri said, adding that with the guidance of her directors, she was able to play Jinky well.

(It was really heavy for me because she was very different. Jinky is different from me, Therese, so there were scenes that I was shy to do but managed to do it.)

The hardwork paid off as Hamog won 4 awards at the Cinema One Original Awards, including Best Actress for Teri.

Before Hamog, Teri appeared in the independent film Ang Huling Cha-Cha ni Anita (Anita’s Last Cha-Cha) which starred Angel Aquino, which also got her a Best Actress award in CineFilipino. She also did Bitukang Manok.

When asked about what’s next for her following the achievements she received internationally, Teri said she just finished a new film and will start doing a teleserye.

Teri also said that she would prefer something more “intense” roles to lighthearted ones.

“Like gusto ko po yung very intense yung mga roles ko po na gagawin, hindi yung parang wala lang, part of teenhood,” she said. “Sana I could have the choice to not go through that process. Hopefully maging successful [even] if I do not choose that way, that path. And gustung-gusto ko po yung mga mahihirap na challenging na roles.”

(I really want to do intense roles, not just like the carefree part of teenhood… I hope I could have the choice to not go through that process. Hopefully, I would still be successful even if I do not choose that path, and I really want to do challenging roles.)

But Teri clarified that intense meant not only her characters, but also the story. She said she wants to try all types of roles – even a transgender.

At a young age, Teri has accomplished a lot and when asked to describe herself as an actress, she replied, “It’s hard to say who am I when I’m in the stage of like not really knowing, not really sure of who I really am but I try.

“I’m just a teen. Nagkakamali po ako, ganun po, and ‘di po ako ganun ka sure sa mga decisions ko. That’s me (I still make mistakes, and I’m not still sure of my decisions).

“Sometimes I fail, like even in acting I also fail. I know I do in some scenes and I try my best. Persistent po ako even though minsan dinadoubt ko yung sarili ko but I try my best (I’m a very persistent person even though I doubt myself a lot, but I do my best).

“It’s hard to say who I am kasi baka sabihin na, ‘Ay, feelingera naman. Feeling niya na ay confident siya.’ ‘Di ko pa sure kung sino ako. Maybe my friends, maybe yung director ko they know who I am based on what I do.” Teri said.

(It’s still hard to say who I am because people might think I’m so overconfident. I’m still not sure who I am. Maybe my friends do, maybe yung director ko, they know who I am based on what I do.) – Rappler.com
