Maine Mendoza pens essay: ‘We are not born to please everybody’

MANILA, Philippines – It’s been one year since Maine Mendoza caught everyone’s attention as Yaya Dub in Eat Bulaga’s Kalyeserye. Two movies, various endorsements later, Maine vowed to remain the same person that she is. (READ: 10 fun facts about Maine Mendoza, aka Yaya Dub)

In her blog entry, “That’s how it works,” Maine aired her frustration with how some people change themselves or their values just to please people in showbiz.

Maine wrote that her essay was prompted by an incident – without specifying it – which she said was unexpected and “made [her] question some things.” (READ: Maine Mendoza defends Alden Richards, artists from online trolls)

“If there is one thing in this world that I would never do, that would be it – pleasing people. I mean, we are in a world full of pretentious beings. Especially in my case, I am living in a world full of barbies – and no, it ain’t fantastic.

“Some people have really mastered the art of pretension; and it is up to us to determine what’s real and what’s not,” Maine wrote, saying that people can encounter this type of people.

“Why bother trying to be someone you are not when you can just be yourself? Why seek for people’s approval on how to live your life? Why let other people’s opinions define you? Is that how it should work?” she asked.

In the same blog entry, Maine shared how some people she met in showbiz told her to do things that would please others – but she firmly refuses to do this.

“I do not need and want to pretend to be someone I am not and do something I am not willing to do just to be loved and ‘accepted’ by the people in this ‘barbie world,'” Main wrote. “I would never change who I am just to conform to the norms of this industry. Sure, ‘that’s how it works’, but I am who I am, and it’s up to people if they will like me or not.”

She also reminded everyone: “We are not born to please everybody.

“You should know that not everybody will like you for who you are and what you do and you just have to accept it. C’est la vie (That’s life). Live your life the way you want and not the way others would want you to.”

Maine wrote that people should not change themselves just to try to please others, and that there will be those who would try to bring others down, which one should just accept as part of life.

“How others see you is none of your business, at the end of the day what matters most is how you see yourself,” Maine wrote.

She later continued: “For as long as you know that you have done nothing wrong to anyone then I don’t think there’s something for you to be worried about,” she continued. “Live your life the way you want to be and stop seeking for people’s approval in everything you do.”

Maine ends her blog entry: “Accept the reality that you cannot please everybody and we are not born to do that. Always be true to yourself and to those around you and remain that way – that would be enough.
