MANILA, Philippines – Fans of the game Pokemon Go gathered on Friday, August 12 at 50 SM malls for a huge Pokemon Go “lure party.”
At the malls, over 150 “PokeStops,” areas where one can get Poke Balls and other items, were installed with Lure Modules, which attract Pokemon to a PokeStop for 30 minutes.
But instead of the usual 30 minutes, the PokeStops at the party were set with lures for 4 hours – from 5 to 9 pm.
At SM Megamall, gamers gathered in the new atrium, where the lures were posted, to catch their favorite Pokemon.
Wilbert Lerios said that he immediately signed up when he found out that Pokemon Go was about to be released. After it was released in the country, he said he started going around the Metro to catch Pokemon.
“One of the tips I actually got was playing another game that was developed by Niantic, which is called Ingress,” he said. “Most of the hot spots in Ingress are also applied here for Pokemon Go.”
Shuichi (his code name), who had a Pokemon backpack, showed his collection of Poke Balls and arcade chips.
“For me, Pokemon Go is very special for Pokemon fans all over the world because it bonds us with our childhood, our feelings, so many things,” he said.
His Poke Balls are one of his favorite collections of the items he’s been collecting in the past years.
Jomi, another player, came dressed as the series’ main character, Ash Ketchum. When asked what was the best part about playing the game, he said, “It’s a new way to make new friends and play the game as well.”
As for the Ash outfit, Jomi said he just loves the character a lot. “[Ash] loves his Pokemons very much,” he said, adding his own favorite Pokemon so far is Charizard.
Jennylyn, who dressed up as Jessie of the villinous duo Team Rocket, said she always wanted to cosplay the character, even before. She was joined by her friend Marky, who was dressed as James. Both of them said they will cosplay Team Rocket in the upcoming 2016 AsiaPOP Comic Convention.
If you’ve been playing Pokemon Go and are having a hard time catching all the different scecies, photographer Alecs Ongcal has some tips:
If you want your steps to count for you to hatch your egg, you shouldn’t go above 60 kph and its best to walk in a straight line.
Eggs, which you can get at PokeStops, can get you rare Pokemon, but you have to put them in incubators and travel a minimum distance for them to hatch.
Some places are a nest to a specific type of pokemon.
Manila Bay, for example, is near the sea, so expect a lot of water type Pokemon there. SM Mall of Asia has a lot of electric types and some ground types. If you weren’t able to get a Pikachu as your starter pokemon, try your chances there.

At the SM MOA, the MOA Globe was turned into a giant Poke Ball.
Many of the players there also came in costume or in Pokemon shirts.
