Billy Crawford on hosting ‘Little Big Shots’
'This is I think the toughest job for me,' Billy says on his new hosting job

MANILA, Philippines – Billy Crawford may be a seasoned host but he admits that doing Little Big Shots is by far the toughest gig he’s had.

Ito yung pinakakabado ako (This probably the one I’m nervous about the most),” Billy said during the Little Big Shots press conference last Tuesday, August 8. ” But iyon lahat para sa amin talaga... I’m talking about the staff [from] the directors, cameramen, to everyone na involved sa programang ito. Pagod kami after ng taping. We’re so drained. Pero we looked forward to the next day of taping, kasi there’s something new na maaliw na naman kami ng mga bata. So sila yung mga energy pills namin.”

(For all of us…I’m taking about the staff [from] the directors, cameramen… We’re all tired after taping. We’re so drained. But we looked forward to the next day of taping, because there’s something new that we be amused by the kids. They are our energy pills.)

Louie Andrada, business unit head of ABS-CBN said that the people behind the show picked Billy because of the chemistry he has with the kids.

Billy beat out Ogie Alcasid, who also auditioned for the show. But Billy says that there’s no competition between him and the singer-songwriter. In fact, Ogie congratulated him when he got the job.

Sabi niya (He said) ‘bro, I’m happy for you. I’m so proud of you. I’ll always be right behind you…It’s nothing about competition talaga. I’m still shocked na napunta nga sa akin (that the show was given to me).”

Compared to Your Face Sounds Familiar Kids, Billy says he felt that he was dealing with strangers.

“[The] Your Face [Sounds Familiar] Kids, mga professional na bata. They’re all singers, performers. Ninety percent of them have their own albums and are competition winners. Itong mga batang ito [on the show], they’re strangers to me. So kailangan ko silang kilalanin,” he said.

([The] Your Face [Sounds Familiar] Kids, the children are professional. They’re all singers, performers. Ninety percent of them have their own albums and are competition winners. These kids [on the show], they’re strangers to me. So I need to get to know them.)

Similar to the kids he meets, Billy started his showbiz career as a youngster; but he says that unlike his time, today’s kids are much more driven.

“In all honesty, ‘yung mga edad kong iyon – three, four, five, hindi naman namin iniisip na trabaho. We’re just having fun. So imagine just being onstage and tapos nagpapakitang gilas ka or tumatawa ka is big enough. Nung maintiidhan na mo kung ano ‘yung ginagawa mo, that’s when you take it seriously.

(In all honesty, at that age – three, four, five, we don’t think it’s work. We’re just having fun. So imagine just being onstage and just showing your talent or laughing is big enough. When you start to understand what you’re doing, that’s when you take it seriously.)

“At tsaka yung mga bata ngayon, ibang-iba sa panahon namin. So it’s itneresting to see the attitude of these kids, yung confidence nila ngayon, yung kakayahan nila, ibang-iba…,” he said.

(Kids today, they’re very different. So it’s interesting to see the attitude of these kids, their confidence, what they can do…)

Little Big Shots is based on the popular children’s talent show created by Steve Harvey and Ellen DeGeneres. Two Filipinos kids – Elha Nympha and Balang have been featured in the US and UK versions. – Rappler.com
