Christian Bautista on Rachelle Ann Go’s engagement, new album ‘Kapit’
Christian says he's willing to sing at Rachelle's wedding if he's invited

MANILA, Philippines — Christian Bautista is happy for newly engaged ex-girlfriend Rachelle Anne Go. Given the chance, the singer-actor revealed that he would be more than willing to sing at the wedding of Rachelle and her fiance Martin Spies.

During the press conference for the launch of his latest album Kapit on Tuesday, September 19, Christian said that he reached out to Rachelle after hearing about the engagement.

“I’m happy for her. It’s been a while. Kami lahat si  (All of us) Erik [Santos], Mark [Bautista], we all texted her and messaged her. It’s about time [to move on].”

Christian and Rachelle dated for two years but ended their relationship in 2007. The Hamilton star then dated Gab Valenciano before getting engaged to Martin Spies, a New York-based businessman early this month.

Having sung at some of his friends’ wedding in the past, Christian was asked if he would be willing to sing at Rachelle and Martin’s wedding.

Ang tamang sagot d’yan is kapag ini-invite niya ako to sing, I will. Siya muna, manggaling muna sa kanya, ‘Christian can you sing at my wedding?’ Hindi yung [voluntarily] Rachelle I want to sing at your wedding. Hihintayin ko muna.” (The correct answer to that is if I’m invited to sing, I will. It should come from her like, ‘Christian can you sing at my wedding? It should not be [voluntarily] Rachelle Iwant to sing at yuor wedding. I’l wait for that.)

Para sa kanilang dalawa, pwede nilang gawing theme song, ‘It’s your smile, your face, your lips that I miss’ kasi minsan nagta-travel travel sila so I think bagay sa kanila ‘yun,” he said, referring to the lyrics of Basil Valdez’s hit song “You.”  (For the two of them, we can make the theme song ‘It’s your smile, your face , your lips that I miss’ since they travel together, so I think it suits them.)

On his new album Kapit

After two years of releasing mostly singles, Christian is back with his 7th album under Universal Records entitled Kapit. According to him, Kapit holds a special place in his heart because the songs were inspired by real life experiences.

Looking back, Christian revealed that there was a point in his career when he wanted to give up, which was the inspiration for the album’s carrier track.

“I guess every artist, or singer, or band goes through this phase na, ‘Maybe this is the end, maybe I should stop.’ Pero you know, the fans, and the music itself, family, friends and my label, my management, [they keep saying] kaya pa, puwede pa. We can push some more.” (But you know, the fans and the music itself, family, friends and my label, my management [they keep saying] we can still do it, it’s still possible. We can push some more.)

“Sometimes it stops, the creativity, the drive, pero (but) you just have to find it again. In anything, in a relationship, in a job that you’ve been doing for 20 years na walang bago, in anything. Hanapin mo lang ulit ‘yung (You just have to look for that) fire and go for it.”

Rather than let his insecurities get the best of him, Christian decided to focus all his attention to song writing. He wrote and produced some of the songs in his latest album, something that he has never done before.

“If you hear Kapit, its not your typical Christian [Bautista] song. I also have to try to adapt. I have to also reach out and be risky from time to time. Di puwede ‘yung (It cannot be ) the same thing over and over again. I believe in innovate or die.”

Christian is also quite optimistic about the current state of the local music industry. With the increased popularity of streaming, artists are able to reach a much wider audience than before. However, Christian still wanted to release a physical album for his fans.

“The world has changed. Konti na lang ang nagre-release ng (Only a few just release a) physicial album. Everything’s digital now. I believe lang na I had to release a physical kasi that was the market that I started with. So my fans, also from more than 15 years ago, expect a physical album so meron pa rin.”

“Pero the challenge is to reach out to digital listeners – Spotify, Apple Music listeners, so I have to be constantly on social media, constantly being in front of [the media], patuloy lang maging exciting sa [Instagram] stories. Kailangan laging maging visible, and be authentic. Alam na ng tao ngayon kung sino ang plastic at hindi totoo. Alam nila ‘di mo ‘yun matatago so I have to find something genuine sa sarili ko na magugustuhan ng tao.” (But the challenge is to reach out to digital listeners – Spotify, Apple Music listeners, so I have to be constantly on social media, constantly in fron of [the media], make it exciting on [Instagram] stories. I always have to be visible and to be authentic. People now know who’s fake and who’s not real. They know you can’t hide that so I have to find something genuine in myself that people will like.)

On future projects after My Love From The Star

As for his acting career, Christian revealed that he wanted to play the role of a villain in either Alyas Robinhood Book 2 or Super Ma’am. Although thankful for the projects he has been given, he shared that he wanted to explore darker roles in the future.

Tingnan natin kung kaya natin para ma-break naman yung mold. Para maiba. Although I love Winston sa My Love From The Star and sumakto talaga pero I want to deviate a bit then maybe balik ulit. ‘Di naman puwede nacompletely ibahin mo ‘yung image mo kasi yung mga fans mo of the past few years malilito talaga sila so you have to go back.” (Let’s see if we can break the mold. So it will be different. Although I love Winston in My Love From The Star, and it was right, I want to deviate a bit then maybe return to it. You really can’t change much of your image beause the fans you have in the past years might get confused, so you have to go back.)
