Ai-Ai delas Alas plays single mom in 'Bes and the Beshies'
MANILA, Philippines – Ai-Ai delas Alas returns to the movies in a new comedy film together with Zsa Zsa Padilla, Carmi Martin, and Beauty Gonzalez.
Titled Bes and the Beshies, the movie tells the story of 4 friends and the different struggles they face in their relationships.
During the press conference for her upcoming movie, Ai-Ai revealed that her character, being a single mom, hits a little too close to home. In Bes and the Beshies, Ai-Ai plays Charla, a single mom who's taken on several odd jobs to support her family.
Looking back, Ai-Ai shared that she had to miss several school events because of her busy schedule.
"Mahirap maging single parent kasi 'yung time na gusto mo ibigay sa anak mo, na kailangan ka nila, kunwari meron kayong PTA, minsan 'di ka makakapunta kasi nagtatrabaho ka. So nakakalungkot kasi minsan mag-isa lang siya or lola ['yung kasama niya] kahit gusto mo ikaw 'yung nandun para sa kanila," she said.
(It's very hard being a single parent because the time you want to give your child when they need you, like when there's PTA, sometimes you can't go because you have work. So it's very sad because sometimes they're on their own or the grandmother would go if even you want to be there for them.)
"Pero ako, I see to it na palagi kong binibigyan ng oras 'yung mga ganyan, na kailangan nasa school ako. Magpapalam ako talaga."
(But for me, I see to it that I give the time for that, especially when I'm needed in school. I will really ask for permission.)
Written by Ricky Lee and directed by Joel Lamangan, Ai-Ai promised fans that Bes and Beshies wouldn't be your typical slapstick comedy with the overused cliché plot. She's also proud to be doing another movie with strong female characters as leads, after Jose Javier Reyes's Pinay Pie in 2003.
Even though it's headlined by veterans, Ai-Ai shared that everyone can relate to the story.
"[Pati mga] millennial, [mga] bata. Hindi siya yung baduy na comedy. Alam mo 'yung situational siya? Makaka-relate ka pati dialogue."
(Even the millennials, the kids, can relate. This is not a corny comedy film. You know, it's very situational. You can relate even to the dialogue.)
This is the first time that Ai-Ai is working with Direk Joel, Zsa Zsa, Carmi, and Beauty. When asked about their working relationship on set, the comedienne had nothing but kind words for her co-stars.
"Masaya kami sa set. Saka lagot kami lahat kay direk Joel 'pag mabagal kami. Mahigpit si lolo kaya lahat kami aligaga 'pag tinatawag na kami ni Direk."
(We're very happy at the set. And we'll get scolded by direk Joel if we're slow. He's very strict that's why we get a little frantic when he calls us.)
Bes and the Beshies hits theaters on October 18. – Rappler.com
