The 'Gayuma' rapper says he's open to doing more films, for as long as they have good concepts

MANILA, Philippines – Rapper and Respeto actor Abra was stunned as he picked up the Best Actor award at the 41st Gawad Urian on Thursday, June 14.

Speaking to reporters after the show, Abra said when he gets offers to do movies, he is not letting go of his first love – music. In fact, he credited his co-rapper Loonie and said they both share the award.

“Parang kami ‘yung nagrepresent ng kultura – ‘yung rap battle, ‘yung rap sa Pinas. Siyempre, sabay din kami ni meeting ni direk [Treb Monteras II]. Sabay rin kami nag-usap at pumayag na gawin natin itong film na ito at gawin natin ‘yung best natin para ma-represent natin kung ano ‘yung nangyayari, ” he said.

(We represented the culture – the rap battle, the rap in the Philippines. Of course, we both met with direk [Treb Monteras II]. We talked and said yes to the film  at the same time, and do our best to represent what’s happening around us.)

With regards to popularity of rap in the country, the “Gayuma” singer said: “Buhay na buhay po ang rap….Ang saya maging rapper ngayon, lalo ngayon ‘yung mga contemporaries ko may mga tiwala, nagbukas ng pintuan at parang ang sarap maglaro, gawa lang ng music, may makita kang mangyari. Mahalin mo yung ginagawa mo.”

(Rap is alive in the country. It’s great to be a rapper now, especially now with so many of my contemporaries have the trust, doors have opened and it just feels nice to play with it, make some music, and see what happnes. Just love what you do.)

Asked if he will continue with acting, Abra said he would like to focus on his music for now.

Kailangan ko bumawi sa music side kasi marami pa akong utang. Ang mga kantang matagal ko nang dapat nilabas pero medyo na delay ako. Pero grabe, sulit.” (I need to get back to the music side because I still have some debts. The songs that I should have released a long time but got delayed. But this was all worth it.)

He said that he’s open to doing more films, providing that it has a good concept. He  would love to do a sci-fi film. He also said that he would love to do a movie with Maja Salvador because of the energy she gives out in her work.
