MANILA, Philippines – After taking a break from doing movies, Kris Aquino returns to the big screen as Sasha, a successful online businesswoman, in I Love You Hater. She topbills alongside young stars Julia Barretto and Joshua Garcia.
And while it’s all been smooth sailing so far, Kris admitted to asking Star Cinema and movie director Olivia Lamasan, a consultant for the production company, to change one thing in the script – Sasha was supposed to have a scene with her mother who was sick.
Feeling that it was too close to home, she asked that the character be changed to a father with Alzheimer’s instead.
“I said, ‘is it okay if the character becomes a father? Because if it was a mother, I felt it would exploit too much what I had to go through,” she told reporters at a chance interview on the sidelines of her press conference for the movie on Monday, June 18.
Kris’ mother is the late former president Cory Aquino, widow of anti-Marcos icon Ninoy. Cory died in August 2009 after a long battle against colon cancer.
It’s no secret that Kris looks up to both her mother and father. Ninoy, who was imprisoned and later went on exile during the dark days of martial law. It was only during Ninoy’s exile in Boston where Kris truly got to spend time with her father.
Her relationship with her mother, meanwhile, has also been a series of ups and downs. In an earlier live broadcast, Kris openly spoke about her mother’s disappointment when she got pregnant with actor Philip Salvador while he was still a married man. Still, Cory was there was Kris gave birth to Josh. Cory, until her death, had been doting on Kris’ eldest son.
Despite the changes, Kris said the scene still affected her.
“I didn’t know that [the scene] would affect me deeply and there was this one line that I had to say over and over again because I really could not do it. And I guess I’m allowed to say that line. The father says: ‘Please take care of Sasha because I’m about to reunite with her mom in heaven.'”
She added: “None of them thought I would react that much, and to that extent. And even I did not think that those words would have so much meaning to me. So it became so real,” she said.
On JoshLia tandem
During the press conference, Kris had nothing but praise for her two co-stars.
“Si Joshua Garcia will be here 15 years from now, 20 years from now. He will become one of the greatest actors that the Philippines has ever had. But Julia has hunger and that’s very important. It’s different when you’re hungry to prove yourself and she has that,” she said.

Joshua and Julia said they were flattered by Kris’ praises.
“It’s nice to have somebody who can see right through you and understands you without having to say a word. It’s nice to be understood and to be appreciated because I know what its like to be taken for granted also. It’s also nice to be hearing it coming from Ms. Kris,” Julia said.
Joshua, meanwhile, said: “Sobrang thankful ako. Ako’y masaya kasi isa sa mga matagal na sa industriya ang naka-appreciate ng ginagawa ko.”
(I’m very thankful. I’m very happy because she’s been in the industry for so long and she appreciates my work.)
