Gary Valenciano’s mother Grimilda Ortiz dies at 84
Gary V remembers on Instagram happy times with his mother

MANILA, Philippines – Grimilda Ortiz, mother of Gary Valenciano, died in Orlando, Florida on April 17 (Philippine time), after battling several illnesses.

Valenciano announced the news on Instagram.

“Today at 12:42pm here in Orlando (12:42am in Manila) …my mom was welcomed home in to the arms of her Lord and savior Jesus Christ,” he wrote in the caption of a video post where they were singing together.

“I know this may come as a shock for some of you, as she has always been seen as someone with a lot of life to live. She was always the life of any gathering, but last week was really tough on her as she had to battle it out against pneumonia, congestive heart failure, and H1n1 flu… all of which came almost at the same time on her 84yr old body,” he added.

He remembered his mother, saying: “her crazy comments, her jokes, her words of encouragement, her laughter, her habit of standing by the driveway waving goodbye to us until our car turns the corner, are just some of the things we all will miss. I’m sure my siblings have countless other things to add on to this list.”

He also thanked the people who showed their family support throughout the ordeal.

He said that while it will be difficult to move forward without his mother, “if we can practice to love each other the way she loved us, which was always as unconditional as can be, we will get by with more laughter, yes with some tears, with thankfulness, and gratitude for having had her with us for these many years.”

Today at 12:42pm here in Orlando (12:42am in Manila) …my mom was welcomed home in to the arms of her Lord and savior Jesus Christ. I know this may come as a shock for some of you, as she has always been seen as someone with a lot of life to live. She was always the life of any gathering, but last week was really tough on her as she had to battle it out against pneumonia, congestive heart failure, and H1n1 flu…all of which came almost at the same time on her 84yr old body. I want to thank the few that first became aware of what we were all facing these past few days and sent us encouraging messages of hope. Now the news is spreading that Mom, or Tita Grimi, or Mamita to others, has gone home. On her 80th birthday 4 years ago these inspiring words were displayed on the reception table of her celebration… “Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.” Somehow this sums up how she lived…and how she loved. Her crazy comments, her jokes, her words of encouragement, her laughter, her habit of standing by the driveway waving goodbye to us until our car turns the corner, are just some of the things we all will miss. I’m sure my siblings have countless other things to add on to this list. But we thank you all…our friends, our neighbors, and most especially our cousins like the Valenciano, Martin and Anson families, who simply always responded to her words and actions of love, by loving her back in your most special of ways. A new season in our lives has begun. We n ow move on, forward to life with mom not being around us…but in us. It will take some getting used to but I believe if we can practice to love each other the way she loved us, which was always as unconditional as can be, we will get by with more laughter, yes with some tears, with thankfulness, and gratitude for having had her with us for these many years. The hue of this picture of our family’s history may look painful and sorrowful…but because we allowed God to be in our midst, He took this event in His hands and turned it into a masterpiece. Thank you Jesus…yours is all the glory. And thank You for this most precious and priceless woman who you destined to become our mother.

Valenciano’s wife Angeli Pangilinan also posted a tribute to her mother-in-law on her own Instagram account.

“I will miss her. I have always asked myself what I did in my life to deserve such a wonderful mother-in-law who mentored me throughout her life,” Pangilinan wrote.

“Thank you Jesus for sending us an angel on earth to guide us all throughout our life. She admitted making mistakes in her life but we all know that ‘in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose!’… so God has a wonderful way of recreating broken paths and making then straight again. Mamita’s legacy is extraordinary and I am deeply privileged to have been the wife of her son and to have been part of her amazing life,” she added.

I will miss her. I have always asked myself what I did in my life to deserve such a wonderful mother-in-law who mentored me throughout her life. She was the glue of the entire Vee-Oh clan. 11 siblings. 11 spouses. 36 grandchildren. 17 great grandchildren and the 18th on the way. (They beat the Pangilinans! hehe) The pain of losing her is intense. She decided to come last year after Gary’s surgeries despite her frail health so she could check on her favorite child(acknowledged by all the other 10 siblings)…. I remember buying a new bed, a dining table for the first floor as she couldn’t go up the stairs anymore and the state of major panic she caused as the Vees in Manila found out that the Queen was coming!!!!!!!!…. I will miss Mamita who we lost yesterday to a horrible flu virus that compounded her already challenging pneumonia and congestive heart failure. She was the model of unconditional love. She celebrated her last birthday in her favorite Manila (Kai catering and Goldilocks cake!) and we are deeply grateful to God for all the beautiful memories from that August 2018 trip. We had a reunion with Gary’s first cousins ~ the Tony and Norma Martin clan, and second cousins ~ the Ansons .:and just all these wonderful family friends who were so dear to her. Like Tita Conchita Razon… Martin’s mom. Thank you Jesus for sending us an angel on earth to guide us all throughout our life. She admitted making mistakes in her life but we all know that “in all things God w orks for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose!”.. so God has a wonderful way of recreating broken paths and making then straight again. Mamita’s legacy is extraordinary and I am deeply privileged to have been the wife of her son and to have been part of her amazing life. #celebratemamita #grimildasantiagoortiz #familyfirst #thevalencianos #garyvalenciano
