From Westeros to a galaxy far, far away

MANILA, Philippines – What’s next for David Benioff and D.B. Weiss after Games of Thrones wraps up by the end of May 2019? Star Wars in 2022, it seems.

Walt Disney Company chairman Bob Iger said on Wednesday, May 15, that the next film in the Star Wars franchise following The Rise of Skywalker will be created with the twosome. The upcoming movie is set to release in 2022.

Iger did not expound on the Game of Thrones showrunners’ role in remarks made at the MoffetNathanson Media & Communications summit.

Iger also said that two Star Wars shows will be released for Disney’s upcoming streaming platform, Disney+. They’ll also be taking a 3-year pause after The Rise of Skywalker is released in 2019 before they start working on the two shows and the Benioff and Weiss film.

It was announced in 2018 that the two would be writing and producing a Star Wars series that’s different from the ongoing Skywalker saga. iO9 said it remains unclear if Benioff and Weiss will still be working on a new series or just on film.

Benioff and Weiss have been the subject of criticism lately because of the ongoing final season of Game of Thrones, a wildly popular TV series based on George R.R. Martin’s book series A Song of Ice and Fire. The TV show has progressed beyond the events in the books since season 6. Martin has yet to finish the two upcoming books in the series. – Rappler.com
