Is the end in sight for ‘The Big Bang Theory’?

MANILA, Philippines – The Big Bang Theory was previously renewed until season 10 last March, and that just may be its last. 

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter (THR), showrunner Steve Molaro said: “I’m going to move forward along with Chuck [Lorre, co-creator and executive producer] that 10 is the end unless we’re told otherwise. These are decisions that are so far away I can’t really even think about that. I have no choice but to move forward … it’s so far away. The mindset is it’s going to be the 10 and then we’ll see what happens after that.”

In the same interview, Molaro, also said that Season 7 will be a cliffhanger. The coming seasons will see lots of growth for the characters, too. 

The Big Bang Theory centers on four super-smart, geeky friends Sheldon (Jim Parsons), Leonard (Johnny Galecki), Raj (Kunal Nayyar), and Howard (Simon Helberg), and their street-smart neighbor Penny (Kaley Cuoco). Over time, guest stars have also joined the show permanently: Bernadette, Howard’s wife, played by Melissa Rauch, and Amy, Sheldon’s girlfriend (as they define it) played by Mayim Bialik. 

As for the show’s ultimate ending, Molaro says that they don’t have a specific story yet in mind, and that there’s no “official ending.” “We all have thoughts and talk about little things here and there but we can’t even think four episodes ahead on this show, so to think 72 ahead is kind of crazy,” he said. 

So what do fans have to look forward to in the upcoming episodes? Molaro says that the last 3 are going to be big, with a lot of “big moves” happening in the process. 

Watch for one of these upcoming episodes to be Star Wars-themed, given its airdate’s proximity to May 4, Star Wars Day (as in, “May the 4th be with you,” a play on the iconic phrase “May the Force be with you” from the popular movies). According to THR, the episode was done in collaboration with Lucasfilm, a production company founded by George Lucas, the director of all the Star Wars movies.
