Jennifer Lawrence speaks up about nude photo leak, a ‘sex crime’

'It’s disgusting. The law needs to be changed, and we need to change,' she tells 'Vanity Fair'

MANILA, Philippines – For the first time, popular actress Jennifer Lawrence has spoken up about the mass leaking of several Hollywood actresses’ nude photos, including her own.

She is on the cover of the November issue of Vanity Fair, and in the cover story, she raises the issue of privacy and the right to choices, particularly for public figures.

“Just because I’m a public figure, just because I’m an actress, does not mean that I asked for this,” Jennifer, 24, told Vanity Fair. “It does not mean that it comes with the territory. It’s my body, and it should be my choice, and the fact that it is not my choice is absolutely disgusting. I can’t believe that we even live in that kind of world.”

Echoing developing points on the topic, Jennifer also called the mass photo leak a “sex crime.”

“It is not a scandal. It is a sex crime…It is a sexual violation. It’s disgusting. The law needs to be changed, and we need to change. That’s why these Web sites are responsible. Just the fact that somebody can be sexually exploited and violated, and the first thought that crosses somebody’s mind is to make a profit from it.”

According to Vanity Fair, she also considered writing a statement before, but said that she would get upset at what she would write at the time.

“I started to write an apology, but I don’t have anything to say I’m sorry for. I was in a loving, healthy, great relationship for four years. It was long distance, and either your boyfriend is going to look at porn or he’s going to look at you,” she said.

According to the article, she has recovered from the situation, though she implores others not to participate in spreading the photos, or viewing them.

Hackers first released a trove of nude starlets’ photos on the Labor Day weekend at the start of September, after snatching them from Apple’s iCloud in what the tech giant has called a “targeted attack.” A second wave came three weeks later.

The artists affected include Jennifer, Kirsten Dunst, and Kim Kardashian, among many others. – with reports from Agence France-Presse/Rappler.com
