MANILA, Philippines – Actor Jake Cuenca won the Best Actor Award at the 2014 International Film Festival Manhattan (IFFM), held last October 23 at the Philippine Center Kalayaan Hall in New York.

Jake won for his portrayal in the movie Mulat (international name: Awaken). Diane Ventura, who directed the film, also got the Best Director award for the movie.

On his Twitter account, Jake, who personally accepted the award, expressed his happiness about being recognized.

He also posted a photo of him and his director Diane on Instagram, with their awards.

“Yup that just happened! To God be the glory this is my first international award and I I just won best actor,” the caption read.

In the film, Jake falls for a mysterious woman (Loren Burgos) with a “strange mental affliction.” His character clashes with Ryan Eigenmann, who portrays the other strong male character in the story.

Meanwhile, actress Liza Diño won Best Actress for her leading role in In Nomine Matris. The movie, directed by Will Fredo, was also chosen as Best Feature Film in the festival.

This is the second award for Liza in the IFFM. She won the same award in 2011 for the movie Compound.
