After ‘The Voice,’ Katriz Trinidad looks forward to her music career

NBC

She talks about working with Pharrell Williams, her love for soul and jazz, and what's next for her
MANILA, Philippines – Katriz Trinidad knew she wanted to sing ever since she was young, and one of the most important moments in her career so far came when she auditioned for The Voice.

“I started singing at the age of 5, and started competing at the age of 7, so ever since I got the feel of the stage, I realized, I want to sing for the rest of my life,” Katriz, 15, said in a phone interview with Rappler.

Katriz, who calls San Diego home, was part of Pharrell Williams’ team. She sang Alicia Keys’ “Superwoman,” for the Knockout Round of the show. Although she was eliminated early, Katriz said it was a learning experience.

“I am honestly doing wonderful. I mean it was kind of devastating to see that I am not on The Voice, the journey on (The Voice) has ended, but it’s definitely not the end for me, it’s just the beginning,” she said.

Working with Pharrell

For Katriz, the opportunity to work with Pharrell Williams was an honor, she said. She also had the opportunity to meet Alicia Keys during one of their sessions, and learning from them was something she will never forget.

“He’s (Pharrell) definitely incredible. He’s definitely humble. He definitely knows what he’s doing, he’s a producer, musician and songwriter. So being able to learn a lot from him, and knowing what he’s exactly doing for all these years is such a good opportunity because, he honestly pushed me to do what I did on the battle, the knockouts.”

TEAM PHARRELL. Katriz says working with Pharrell was an incredible experience

Katriz said that if there is one thing she has learned about her experience with the show, it’s that she discovered her love for soul and jazz music.

“I am still continuing to learn more about myself as an artist. I came to The Voice having an idea of what I wanted to be. I kind want to be a pop soulful singer, but after the Voice I want to be a soulful singer with a little hint of jazz”

She counts Etta James, Beyonce, Aretha Franklin and Alicia Keys as her favorite singers, describing them as “a great representation of soulful singers.”

When asked what is her favorite part of the experience, she said it was the blind auditions.

“I can say that the blind auditions is one of my favorite moments of my life because it was such a relieving moment because you just want one person to turn for you and for people to turn to me is such as blessing. I can’t be any more thankful and they gave me such great feedback. They have a lot to offer to me since I am only 15 years old. They were really fighting for me, that Pharrell Williams has been looking for an artist like me, that was such an amazing feeling.”

She also added that one of her favorite moments was singing the song “At Last,” which she dedicated to her uncle, who passed away before seeing her sing on the show.

“I am very familiar with that song (At Last). I was able to sing that in my blind audition… very happy because i actually learned it a few years ago. My uncle he taught me the song , he actually passed away so its truly dear to my heart and I love to sing it especially for him.”

Filipino pride and future plans

During the course of her journey in the show, which had a special 3-night airing Tuesday, November 11, her family, friends and the fans were there to lend support. Katriz said that she is thrilled with the support she has been getting from the Filipino community.

“Honestly, aside from The Voice, the outcome of being able to touch some of the Filipino fans, I can’t be thankful enough. Because they are one of the best things that ever happened to me. I have received so much love and support from them and they have been truly great to me so thank you Filipino fans!”

For now, Katriz said she is concentrating on improving her craft as an artist.

“I recently got into dancing. Dancing is something I want to go for. I also started taking piano lessons that started a few weeks ago, and I think it is important for me to start writing music. And I am starting to learn the basics of the piano, so I can kind of get the feeling of having my own melody in my head and start to get the hang of that process.”

Katriz said she cannot thank you enough for the support she has gotten from the show.

“Thank guys so much for the love and support. it really means so much to me and I will not stop ever singing because you guys are the reason why I am continuing to do what I love and I am definitely doing this for you guys. Thank you much. I love.” – Rappler.com

The Voice airs  Tuesdays & Wednesdays, 8:10pm on AXN  Performance rounds begin on November 18.
