MANILA, Philippines – Jonathan Kimble “J.K.” Simmons took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as the fearsome Terrence Fletcher in Whiplash. The awards show was held Sunday, February 22 (February 23 in Manila).

“I am grateful everyday for the most wonderful person I know, my wife, Michelle Schumacher…I’m grateful for your love, your kindness, your wisdom, your sacrifice, which brings me to the above average children,” he joked.

“Call your mom, call your dad…call ’em on the phone, tell then you love them…listen to them for as long as they wanna talk to you. Thank you, Mom and Dad,” he said.

In the film, Terry Fletcher is the conductor of a jazz band, whom aspiring drummer Andrew Neiman wanted to badly impress, despite the fact that Fletcher is known for his incredibly tough and often extreme tactics.

This is J.K. Simmons’s first win, beating other nominees Mark Ruffalo, Ethan Hawke, Edward Norton, and Robert Duvall.

He also bagged SAG, BAFTA, and Golden Globe awards for his role in Whiplash. – Rappler.com
