Designer Carlyle Nuera talks about the Pinoy inspirations behind the gorgeous design
MANILA, Philippines –A new Barbie inspired by the Filipino woman has been released by Mattel.

The Mutya Barbie by Carlyle Nuera made its debut online, with a limited release of 4,400 dolls. The Mutya Barbie is part of the Global Glamour Collection.

In an feature on NBC News, Carlyle shared the inspiration behind the Mutya Barbie doll.

“The name ‘Mutya’ means pearl or beauty or muse; it’s a girl’s name; and it is also used in the titles of beauty pageants in the Philippines,” he said. “My mother, Ruby, was Miss Tacloban in 1976.”

According to Carlyle, in making the Mutya Barbie, he chose the Kira sculpt for the face because it was a favorite of collectors and has not been used for 15 years.

“The print on the organza terno references textiles of the different tribes in the Philippines as well as the sun icon from the flag,” Carlyle said. “The embroidery on the hem is inspired by the Philippines national flower, the sampaguita. The details of Mutya Barbie’s jewelry refer back to tambourine jewelry as well.”

The doll also comes with a gold necklace, clips and fan.
