Toni Gonzaga on criticism about her Bb Pilipinas hosting stint

Toni says she is open to constructive criticism

MANILA, Philippines –TV host and actress Toni Gonzaga said she has nothing to say to those who were not happy about her hosting style during the Binibining Pilipinas coronation night Sunday, March 15. (Toni Gonzaga, Xian Lim to host Bb Pilipinas 2015 coronation)

In a press conference for her new film You’re My Boss on Tuesday, March 17 she said:

“This is the first and last time I will talk about this kasi nung Sunday pa po ito (because this event happened last Sunday), and we’ve all moved on from it. Tapos na po yung coronation night (the coronation night is already finished), we have already declared the winners. So there’s no point in looking back and talking about it over and over again.

Siguro sa akin lang po (Perhaps, in my opinion) – first of all, I just wanna say thank you very much to the committee of Binibining Pilipinas for giving me the opportunity to host such a wonderful event kasi first time ko maexperience ‘yung ganung ka-wild na audience (because it was my first time to experience such a wild audience) and it was definitely a memorable experience for me.

Doon po muna sa mga hindi po natuwa at hindi naibigan ang napanood nila nung Sunday (First of all I want to address those who weren’t at all enthused and those who didn’t love what they were watching on Sunday), I’m humbly asking for an apology, if I have offended or I have maligned or I have hurt anyone of you. But it was never my intention because prior to the show, I was instructed to make the show fun, light, and [to] ease the tension [for the contestants] on the show, especially during the Q&A portion.

So it was never my intention. Again, it was instructed for me to host that way – to make it lively and fun, of course in the spirit of the celebration ng Bb Pilipinas coronation night.

Siyempre naman po (Of course) I don’t wanna miss this opportunity to thank everyone – ‘yung mga friends ko po (my friends) from the press, my friends in the industry – who have been defending me and nagsasalita po ng good and kind words sa akin, maraming, maraming salamat po (to those who spoke good and kind words about me, thank you very much). I really and truly appreciate that from the bottom of my heart.

And also I want to thank the Binibining Pilipinas committee for commending the job I did last Sunday. Actually even the special events, they texted me very nice and encouraging words and I’m very thankful for that.”

She ended the statement lightly with a joke, saying, “And in the spirit of beauty pageants, let us end the issue with world peace.”

You’re My Boss, starring Toni and actor Coco Martin, will open in theaters on April 4, 2015. The film is directed by Antoinette Jadaone.

Earlier, in an interview with Pep, Toni said she is used to the criticism against her and that she is not affected by it.

Wala naman. (Nothing really)

Hindi naman na tayo bago sa mga bashing saka opinions of other people, so okay lang. (We are not new to people criticizing us and that’s the opinion of other people. so it’s fine.)

“We welcome, I’m very open to criticism, to constructive criticism, I’m very open,” Toni said.

Some personalities and social media users expressed dissatisfaction with Toni’s hosting at the coronation night, saying that Toni came off as rude at times.

In one moment referred to by some viewers, Toni reacted to one Binibini’s remark that it was her first time to join the pageant, by asking if she would like to join a second time.

Former Bb Pilipinas Universe 2000 Nina Ricci Alagao also took to social media to express her dismay over Toni’s remarks on the candidates. The post has since been deleted.

Nina posted on her Facebook account a new statement regarding the issue.

Designer Cary Santiago posted on Facebook that Toni was being rude to some of the candidates.

While some were not pleased with Toni’s hosting style, some also commended her for a job well done, like KC Montero.

Some found Toni’s humor funny.
