‘Taklub’ gets Ecumenical Jury Prize-Special Mention at Cannes

MANILA, Philippines – The Filipino film Taklub (Trap) has been given the Ecumenical Jury-Prize Special Mention at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.

According to the announcement made on its website, Taklub was cited for “the sensitive portrayal of individuals and communities working for life in the midst of suffering and death in the shadows of natural catastrophes in the Philippines.” (IN PHOTOS: ‘Taklub’ premieres at Cannes Film Festival 2015)

The 2015 Ecumenical Jury Prize was awarded to the film Mia Madre.

In an interview with the Inquirer, director Brillante Mendoza said that he was very pleased about the honor. The director was in Manila when he received the news and instructed one of the producers Larry Castillo to accept the award and dedicate it to the victims of typhoon Yolanda.

“When I gave a speech before the film’s premiere last May 19 in Cannes, I told the audience that we made this film for ‘Yolanda’ survivors,” he said.

Taklub revolves around survivors of super typhoon `Yolanda’  one year after the devastation that claimed more than 6000 lives.

The movie was shot for 10 days in the city, shot mostly in Barangay 88, San Jose, which was flattened by the storm. 

Taklub competed as part of the Un Certain Regard category at the 68th Cannes International Film Festival but lost to the film Rams from Iceland’s Grimur Hakonarson.
