WATCH: ‘Star-struck’ Pia Wurtzbach meets Manny Pacquiao
(UPDATED) 'Sobrang proud kami sa iyo. Grabe, na star-struck ako sa iyo!' Pia tells Manny, as the boxer gives her a pair of pink boxing gloves

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach and boxing champion Manny Pacquiao met on Thursday, April 14, moments before Pia’s press conference at Novotel.

During the short meeting, Manny, who is currently running for senator, gave Pia a pair of “Miss Universe pink” boxing gloves.

At the conference, Pia recounted how she tweeted about Manny’s loss against Mayweather in May 2015 and inadvertently predicted her own Miss Universe win.

‘Di po ako nagbibiro, nung nag-tweet ako na emotional ako, nung nag-tweet ako na, ‘Kalma lang guys, babawi naman tayo sa Miss Universe’ nung pagkatalo niya against Mayweather.”

(I’m not joking, when I tweeted I was emotional, when I tweeted ‘Calm down guys, we’re going to make up for it in Miss Universe,’ when he lost against Mayweather.)

“Nako, kung alam niyo lang talaga ang hitsura ko noong panahon na iyon, nasa Cagayan de Oro ako (If only you knew what I looked like at the time, I was in Cagayan de Oro). I was at the edge of my seat, in tears, and I was just so sad, disheartened, angry, disappointed. It’s Filipino pride! I want our Manny Pacquiao, our Pacman to win so bad!”

She said she even told Manny about the tweet when she met him.

Sabi ko sa kanya, ‘Congratulations on your victory, we’re very proud of you. Hindi ko alam kung alam mo ito, pero nag-tweet ako noon na sabi ko, ‘Babawi ako sa Miss Universe’ para sa iyo, kasi sobrang fan talaga ako.’ I’m a big fan of Manny Pacquiao as a boxer… Sabi niya, ‘Oo, alam ko.'”

(I told him, ‘Congratulations on your victory, we’re very proud of you. I don’t know if you know this, but I tweeted before, saying ‘I’ll make up for it in Miss Universe’ for you, because I’m such a big fan.’ I’m a big fan of Manny Pacquiao as a boxer. He replied, ‘Yes, I know.’)

Pia said she was thrilled to meet Manny, even though they don’t see eye to eye about certain issues.

One of Pia’s advocacies is HIV/AIDS awareness and she’s a supporter of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) community.

On the other hand, Manny, who is also running for a seat in the Philippine Senate, is against same-sex marriage. He experienced backlash in February, when he said that couples in same-sex marriage were “mas masahol pa sa hayop (worse than animals).”

“To me, I was very happy to be in his presence earlier. I admire him as a boxer, I think that if this is indeed his last fight – great way to end it,” said Pia, referring to Manny’s fight against Timothy Bradley Jr. “Even up to this day, I’m a fan of him as a boxer, although we might have different opinions on some things, but we’re both still Filipinos. And as a fellow Filipino, I am proud of his victory for the Philippines.”

Meeting Manny

Maraming Salamat (Thank you so much),” Pia told Manny when she accepted the gloves, prior to the conference. She also congratulated him for winning the recent match against Timothy Bradley, Jr.

“I’m so happy that in this fight, you finally won. You have the Filipinos behind you on this one,” Pia told Manny. “Sobrang proud kami sa iyo. Grabe, na star-struck ako sa iyo! (We’re all proud of you. Wow, I’m so star struck!)” she said.
