Pia Wurtzbach defends Jessy Mendiola over body-shaming remarks
'Confident Filipinas should be celebrated, not condemned,' Pia says

MANILA, Philippines – Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach has come to the defense of Jessy Mendiola as the actress continues to get criticized on social media regarding her remarks last July 26, upon accepting the award for FHM’s Sexiest Woman 2016.

On Wednesday, August 3, Pia took to Twitter to tell everyone to stop sending hateful comments to Jessy.

Seriously though, enough w/ the Jessy Mendiola hate. Confident Filipinas should be celebrated, not condemned,” Pia wrote adding the hashtags #NoToBodyShaming and #NoToBullying.

Pia’s tweet comes after Esquire Philippines released their August edition featuring her as their “Sexiest Woman Alive” for 2016.

During the FHM 100 Sexiest Women event, Jessy said: “Talo ko pa si Pia Wurtzbach ‘di ba? Nakakaloka ang ganito, sobrang overwhelming. Kung siya confidently beautiful with a heart, tayo sexy, so confidently sexy with a heart.”

(I beat Pia Wurtzbach right? This is really crazy, it’s so overwhelming. If she’s confidently beautiful with a heart, I’m sexy, so confidently sexy with a heart.)

She also previously defended Jessy after netizens critcized her for a comment about Pia which went viral. (READ: Jessy Mendiola: Comment about Pia Wurtzbach ‘taken out of context’)

The beauty queen said: “What I saw was a girl who was just really ecstatic to be given that recognition. Nothing wrong with that. Congratulations, Jessy!”

Jessy said she is very grateful to Pia for defending her from detractors.

“I asked some of my friends na friends din niya to extend my gratitude. Ang sweet nga niya to tweet that. Kung siya nga nakita niya as a joke ‘yun, bakit parang other people won’t see that as a joke?” Jessy said.

(I asked some of our mutual friends to extend my gratitude to her. It was very sweet of her to tweet that. If she saw it as a joke, why won’t other people see that as a joke?)

Aside from Pia, Broadway star Lea Salonga also defended Jessy, saying that being sexy is not only about the outside but also the inside.

“Sexy has nothing to do with the outer shell and all to do with what’s in you. You could be a Victoria’s Secret model and have zero sex appeal, or be someone customarily plus-sized and get everyone in the room to set their gaze upon you. Or your opinion could differ from mine and not be any less valid. It’s in the eye of the beholder,” Lea said. – Rappler.com
