
MANILA, Philippines – Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 players on the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 will either be prepping for war, reading reviews, or be in the thick of it by the time you read this. Activision’s latest first-person shooter is hotly anticipated by fans of the genre, and early adopters waiting for midnight launch times are probably active online as you read this.
For those of you who are new to shooters, or are otherwise from the outside looking in, we’ve got of a primer to get you into those comfy combat boots and out into those firefights.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 2’s single-player campaign situates you in two timelines, reportedly following the exploits of Alex Mason, the main character from the first game, during the Cold War and David Mason, Alex Mason’s son, in the year 2025.
According to the official promotional materials, the campaign follows these characters as they attempt to stop the plans of Raul Menendez, “who hijacks the US military infrastructure to further his own agenda.”
The story follows branching paths as determined by special Strike Force missions, where the death of Strike Force characters and choices made during these special missions alter the course of the main characters’ histories.
In modern first-person shooters, playing with others is a major component that determines the fun factor for most players. As the single-player campaign is reportedly around eight hours long, according to an early review, the multiplayer component aids in the title’s longevity.
That said, the multiplayer game modes will reportedly allow for different ways to enjoy the game. Players who simply want to enjoy killing their friends or enemies in the year 2025 can do that without much issue in various maps and modes. Just remember that strict rules are in place to prevent abuses of all sorts, so be careful with your conduct.
At the same time, folks interested in showing off their prowess can also stream their gameplay can do so through a new streaming capability. The streaming capability also enables players to connect a video camera to their systems so people can watch you while they view your gameplay skills.
Before we forget, there are zombies.
Black Ops 2 also features an alternate gameplay mode that lets you shoot at zombies. There are reportedly at least two game types, namely Tranzit, a mode that strings the maps together and is connected by a bus, and a survival mode that allows for you to shoot things till you’re bitten and collapse in a dead heap. Whether these dead men run or walk, you’ll want to make sure they stay down.
