MANILA, Philippines – Those looking for a bit of knowledge to go with their horror movie marathons may enjoy a new offering by Geographic information Systems (GIS) software maker Esri: a horror map.
CNET reports that Esri released an interactive map that plots around 200 scary movies based on where they took place. Taking data and images from Wikimedia Commons and the Internet Movie Database (IMDb), Esri places the locales for these movies on a world map, linking them to information for each of the movies listed.
The movies are also indexed chronologically. This enables users to track certain trends, such as a movement from Europe to the United States for popular horror settings over time. Users will also notice outliers in the 200 or so ranked scary movies.
Not all the movies are technically scary, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil is more comedic and Godzilla seems more science fiction-based than scary.
Still, it seems interesting to know that somewhere along Interstate 10 in the fictional town of Fairvale, California, young Norman Bates is lying in wait for for a woman to check in to the Bates Motel. – Rappler.com
