MANILA, Philippines – Miss Universe Philippines Celeste Cortesi went the unexpected route when it came to her national costume at the Miss Universe 2022 competition. Instead of going for traditional Filipino garb, she decided to pay homage to an icon of Pinoy pop culture: Darna.

Celeste debuted her heroic look at the Miss Universe national costume competition on Thursday, January 12, walking onstage in Darna’s signature red and gold bikini and boots. Making the look stand out, Celeste also wore a golden backpiece in the shape of the Philippine sun.

The costume was designed by Oliver Tolentino, who also did the design for her preliminary evening gown.

Celeste’s look got a nod of approval from JRB Creative Production, the company behind the ongoing Darna TV series.

In a statement on Thursday they said: “We are proud of Miss Universe Philippines 2022 Celeste Cortesi for championing Darna on the world stage through the 71st Miss Universe national costume competition.”

They added that Celeste had the support of the family of Darna creator, Mars Ravelo.

“We hope that like our beloved Filipino superheroine, Celeste will continue to serve as a source of inspiration and empowerment for women all around the world,” they said.

Celeste is competing to win the country’s fifth Miss Universe title. The coronation will be held in New Orleans on January 14 (morning of January 15, Philippine time). – Rappler.com
