Rappler Talk Entertainment: Furne Amato on dressing Rabiya Mateo
Rappler talks to the fashion designer about working with Rabiya and her team for her Miss Universe gowns

Dubai-based Filipino designer Furne Amato sent social media abuzz when it was announced that he was Miss Universe Philippines Rabiya Mateo’s evening gown designer for the Miss Universe competition.

Filipino pageant aficionados were thrilled to hear that Furne and the late Rocky Gathercole will be providing Rabiya with some of the most important pieces in her competition wardrobe.

Furne is a designer who usually lets his work speak for itself.

From the moment he was asked to make Rabiya’s gowns, to the time they were completed, he was always quick to give a shout out to those who were instrumental in this journey.

In this episode of Rappler Talk Entertainment, Voltaire Tayag talks to Furne about his love for fashion and design. He also shares how his first exposure to the Miss Universe pageant, dressing stars like Mariah Carey, Beyonce, Katy Perry, Arianda Grande and many more, and what it’s like dressing A-list celebrities and beauty queens.

He also talks about the challenges of creating a gown via Zoom meetings and a muslin sample that became the basis for the evenings gowns he made for Mateo.

Watch the 69th Miss Universe Competition on May 17 (in the Philippines) at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Hollywood, Florida. The evening gown competition features only the Top 10 candidates – a contest we’re optimistic Rabiya will be able to be part of.
