WATCH: Shamcey Supsup on mounting Miss Universe Philippines during a pandemic

Days before the finals, Miss Universe Philippines National Director, Shamcey Supsup-Lee took time from her busy schedule to speak to select media about the pageant.

I am certain that when Shamcey accepted the role of MUP National Director, she could not have anticipated that the inaugural edition would be held during a worldwide pandemic. Along with the Miss Universe Philippines Organization Creative Director, Jonas Gaffud, and the MUP Organization Board, they set out to make the pageant accessible to as many people as possible.

Through the innovative Ring Light series subscription on, the pageant has been able to help beneficiaries chosen by the candidates. In addition to the candidates' beneficiaries, AHA Learning Center, WWF, United Filipinos, and the Philippine COVID Archive also receive proceeds from the subscriptions.

“I hope that we really get to embrace and showcase the true beauty of a Filipina,” Shamcey said.

Here are some of the highlights of my interview with Shamcey where I asked her:

  • What has been the most rewarding and challenging part about being the National Director of Miss Universe Philippines for the past 9 months?
  • If you had to choose between a candidate who can win Miss Universe but will be a challenge to work with during her reign or a candidate who will do well in Miss Universe but will be a joy to work with, who would you choose and why?
  • If you were a candidate in this year’s Miss Universe Philippines, how do you think you would have done?

True to Shamcey form, she navigates through the Q&A with charm, substance, and sincerity.  –
