Miss Grand International 2016 1st runner-up Nicole Cordoves revealed on Monday, July 12, that she and fellow host, Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray, were the ones who wrote the script for a “message of hope” during the tail-end of the program.
Nicole said Catriona herself asked if they could pen the script themselves for the spiel, which was part of the coronation night on Sunday, July 11.
“We wrote this message together in the hopes that we get to tell the story of every Filipino in this pandemic – a story of heartbreak and newfound hope,” Nicole said.
The Binibining Pilipinas pageant was also affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The coronation night was originally scheduled for April 2020 but was postponed several times before it finally happened on July 11.
The beauty queen added that they wanted the tone to be “distinctly different,” so they asked help from “Kuya Caloy” to make their script sound like spoken word poetry. “He added the fire and heart the message needed, as well,” she said.
Nicole said the piece is meant to instill hope during trying times. “Sa panahon ng matinding pagsubok, ang ‘Lupang Hinirang’ ang nagpapaalala sa atin ng taglay ng tapang ng mga Pilipino. Ito ang panata sa isa’t-isa.”
(In times of struggle, our national anthem “Lupang Hinirang” is a reminder of our strength as Filipino. This is our promise to each other.)

“You are holding up a piece of the world, together with everyone who heed the call to change. That lifeline… the hope we’re all searching so desperately for, that is the very thing we now build and work towards creating together,” Catriona said.
They concluded by saying that a brighter future lies ahead for the Philippines. “Pilipinas, alam kong nakikinig ka. Muling mag-aalab ang iyong puso at matapang nating haharapin ang bagong umaga.”
