Who is Emma Mary Tiglao, Binibining Pilipinas Intercontinental 2019?
The Pampanga native finally wins a crown after a 5 year wait

MANILA, Philippines — Pampanga’s Emma Mary Tiglao finally got her wish to win a crown during the coronation night of Binibining Pilipinas on Sunday, June 9.

The 24-year old beauty queen will represent the country in the Miss Intercontinental competition. She has huge shoes to fill as she aims to secure a back-to-back crown after Karen Gallman won in January 2019.

The 2019 edition is also a comeback for Emma in Binibini. She competed in 2014 when she was only 19. She also joined Miss World Philippines 2015, and a number of local pageants before making a second try this year.

During the media day in May, Rappler asked Emma what pageantry has taught her.

“The journey itself is amazing. I started at a young age, 17 to be exact. And I’ve noticed that if you really want to join pageantry, you really have to know yourself, na dapat alam mo kung ano ang gusto mo kasi alam mo kung ano motivation, inspiration. Kasi kung hindi mo alam at basta ka lang sumali, you will not enjoy the journey (You have to know what you want bcause you know what will motivate you, inspire you. Because if you don’t know the reason why you’re joining, you will not enjoy the journey),” she said.

Emma took home two special awards during finals night – the Miss Pizza Hut award and the Pitoy Moreno Best in National Costume for her outfit “Fe Esperanza Caridad.”

Her national costume was a labor of love, involving inmates from the Angeles City Jail.

During media day, Emma talked about working with the inmates or PDLs, persons deprived of liberty.

“I want this Binibini journey to be full of Kapampangan people. And I chose Tito Richie Sabinian to make my national costume, and he said let’s bring in the inmates. We call them PDL – persons deprived of liberty. Because if we call them prisoners or inmates, it sounds something else. They’re also humans,” she said in a mix of English and Filipino.

In her Binibini bio, Emma’s said she wants to help the abandoned and less fortunate. She’s done this through various organizations in Pampanga.

In her Binibini video, Emma talked about today’s youth and social media, saying she wished kids played more and spent less time on their phones and computer screens. The situation, she said, also made miss her childhood days.

In an interview posted on Missosology Philippines, Emma talked about going to church and praying for a crown. She said that if the Miss Universe Philippines crown was for her, she’d accept it. But if another crown is given, she’d also accept the mission.

For years, she’s been criticized for her communication skills. But during coronation night, Emma wowed the audience with her answer.

During the Q and A, she was if a free press was important. Emma’s reply was: “Yes it’s important because with the press we are able to be aware not only in our country Philippines but also around the world of what’s happening and as a press we should be responsible, and also as a citizen we should be responsible on the credible sites that we should look for. Thank you.”
