At a press conference that happened to fall on Pride month, candidates representing El Nido and Caloocan take a stand against trans women competing alongside cis women

Two candidates of Miss Philippines Earth 2021 said that transgender women should not be allowed to compete in pageants alongside cisgender women.

In a virtual press conference on June 1 – which also happens to be the beginning of Pride month – the two candidates were asked about whether they were okay with the prospect of competing with a transgender woman in the pageant.

Both candidates said they disapproved of the idea, saying that transgender women should compete in separate pageants.

Miss El Nido Daena Yapparcon said that pageants celebrated “the natural beauty of women” and “the femininity.”

“I believe that transgenders should have their own beauty pageants and it’s because to celebrate their own beauty and to let people know…and to have the respect that they deserve. So I do believe that,” she said.

Miss Caloocan Jerimi Nuqui likewise said that beauty pageants were about “celebrating the natural beauty of naturally born women.”

“I respect transgender, I respect their community as their opinion on their selves, but I also believe we need inclusivity, you know? Miss Universe…we are celebrating the natural beauty of naturally born women and I believe too that this transgender, they have their own pageants where they can showcase their skills, their talents, their beauties.”

“As long as we respect each other’s boundaries, we can have a better world where a war zone earth can turn into a beautiful and wonderful one,” she added.

While transgender women have yet to see major inclusion in mainstream beauty pageants, recent years have seen some moves toward inclusivity.

In 2018, Spain’s Angela Ponce became the first trans woman to compete in the Miss Universe pageant. In May 2021, the Miss South Africa pageant also opened up their competition to transgender women. – Rappler.com
