ABS-CBN unveiled on Tuesday, October 5, the full list of actors who will be starring in Mars Ravelo’s Darna: The TV series, the highly-anticipated adaptation of the Filipino comic book.
Jane de Leon was chosen to play the titular role in 2019 after a series of auditions. She was chosen after actress Liza Soberano backed out due to health reasons. Liza, in turn, had been cast to replace Angel Locsin, who also bowed out of the role due to health reasons.
During the cast reveal, Jane shared that she’s looking forward to meeting the actors she’s working with for the project. “Sobrang excited po ako na makilala lahat ng cast dito (I’m so excited to meet all the cast here),” she said.
Jane will be paired with actor Joshua Garcia, who is set to play a police officer named Bryan Samonte Robles. Further details about his character have yet to be revealed.
Iza Calzado, who was first announced as a cast member in August, introduced her character as Leonor Custodio, the “first Darna.” She will play a “prime warrior” from the fictional planet Marte and will become the mother of Ding and Narda.
Meanwhile, Zaijian Jaranilla will play Ricardo Custodio or Ding, Narda’s brother and sidekick. “Ako ang magiging pinakamalupit na sidekick ni Darna (I’ll be the most awesome sidekick of Darna),” he said.
Rio Locsin, who played Darna in the 1979 film Bira, Darna, Bira, will also be part of the series adaptation.
Also joining the powerhouse cast are Kiko Estrada, Richard Quan, Simon Ibarra, Levi Ignacio, Joj Agpangan, Mark Manicad, Young JV, LA Santos, Yogo Singh, Zeppi Borromeo, Marvin Yap, Tart Carlos, and Gerald Acao.
The actress who will portray Valentina, Darna’s nemesis in the comics, has not yet been introduced.
The cast reveal follows ABS-CBN’s announcement that Chito S. Roño is the newest director for the series. Avel Sunpongco will serve as a co-director.
Filming for the series is set to begin in November. A target release date has yet to be announced. – Rappler.com
