Welcome to the House Targaryen

HBO Max unveiled the first images from the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragons on May 5, Wednesday.

The series is set 300 years before the events of the first series and follows the House Targaryen. It will be available in the Philippines via HBO Go in 2022.

Emma D’Arcy plays Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, the king’s first-born child and a dragonrider of “pure Valyrian blood.”

Matt Smith plays Prince Daemon Targaryen, the younger brother of King Viserys and the heir to the throne. While he’s described as a “peerless warrior and a dragonrider,” HBO also noted a saying in the Game of Thrones universe –  that “whenever a Targaryen is born, the gods toss a coin in the air.” The saying, of course, is linked to the idea that “madness and greatness” come hand-in-hand in the Targaryen bloodline.

Steve Toussaint plays Lord Corlys Velaryon or “The Sea Snake,” who heads House Velaryon, a house whose Valyrian bloodline is as old as the Targaryens. Lord Corlys is “the most famed nautical adventurer in the history of Westeros” and has built the house into one that has the largest navy in the known world and whose riches are greated than the Lannisters.

Olivia Cooke, meanwhile, plays Alicent Hightower, daughter to Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King. Described as “close to the king and his innermost circle,” she has both the graces of the court and keen political acumen.

Rhys Ifans plays Otto Hightower, the “loyal and faithful” Hand of the King. For Ser Otto, Prince Daemon is the “greatest threat to the realm.”

HBO first announced the start of the production by sharing photos from the cast’s table reading. Aside from House of the Dragon, HBO also announced that three other Game of Thrones spinoffs are also in the works

Game of Thrones bagged several awards during its 8-year run, including Emmy Awards for Outstanding Drama Series in 2015, 2016, 2018, and 2019, as well as Golden Globe nominations in the same years. The series finale, which aired in May 2019, was polarizing for fans. – Ysa Abad/Rappler.com
