The sci-fi western ends on a fourth season that premiered in June

MANILA, Philippines – Westworld’s current fourth season is now its last as HBO has decided to pull the plug on the sci-fi western.

The cancellation comes just few weeks after co-creator Jonathan Nolan said at New York Comic Con that they had planned for a fifth and final season to wrap up the story.

In a statement published on The Hollywood Reporter on November 4, HBO said, “Over the past four seasons, Lisa [Joy, co-creator] and [Jonathan] have taken viewers on a mind-bending odyssey, raising the bar at every step.”

“We are tremendously grateful to them, along with their immensely talented cast, producers and crew, and all of our partners at Kilter Films, Bad Robot, and Warner Bros. Television. It’s been a thrill to join them on this journey,” HBO added.

Lisa and Jonathan, as Kilter Films, also released a statement on Westworld’s Twitter, saying: “Making Westworld has been one of the highlights of our careers. We are deeply grateful to our extraordinary cast and crew for creating these indelible characters and brilliant worlds.”

“We’ve been privileged to tell these stories about the future of consciousness – both human and beyond – in the brief window of time before our AI overlords forbid us from doing so,” they said.

Westworld tells the story of the titular Western-themed amusement park inhabited by humanoid robot hosts that cater to the park’s ultra-rich guests. As the series goes on, the hosts become more and more human and end up escaping the park into the futuristic real world.

Among its ensemble cast is Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright, James Marsden, and Thandiwe Newton – who won a Primetime Emmy for her performance on the show.

The show’s debut in 2016 drew in 3.3 million total viewers – the highest for an HBO season premiere at the time. However, the show has failed to sustain its ratings through the seasons.
