After 11 years of laughter, Korean variety show Running Man aired “Lee Kwang-soo’s final race” on Sunday, June 13.

Back in April, Kwang-soo announced that he can no longer continue his activities on Running Man because he had been “steadily undergoing rehabilitation treatment” from the injuries he received from a car accident in February 2020.

Running Man is a show that features the cast members competing in games and challenges, and receiving punishments that usually involve strenuous physical activities. Kwang-soo is part of the original 2010 cast alongside Ji Suk-jin, Yoo Jae-suk, Kim Jong-Kook, Haha and Song Ji-hyo.

Song Joong-Ki and Gary were part of the original line-up but both have left the show. Jeon So-min and Yang Se-chan joined the regular cast in April 2017.

Spoilers ahead.

For Running Man’s 559th episode that aired last Sunday, Kwang-soo went on a trip down memory lane as he reminisced his fondest memories in the show.

“Personally, I want it to feel like normal,” Kwang-soo said.

The production staff sentenced Kwang-soo to 1050 years in prison after reviewing his actions over the past years on the show. The other cast members then set on a “special race” to help Kwang-soo reduce his sentence by answering questions about the comedian.

While the first part of the mission was full of laughter, the Running Man members started tearing up when they penned letters for Kwang-soo.

Suk-jin wrote, “It has already been 11 years since Ifirst met you. You were just ‘Long Legs’ Lee Kwang-soo whom I met at work, but now you’re my little brother whom I’ll be with forever.”

Jae-suk said, “It will feel empty and hard without you around, but don’t worry about us. Do everything that you’ve wanted to do…  it wasn’t boring because of you.”

“I thought we would stay this way forever. And I thought you would be there until the end, which is why I think I feel even sadder. We won’t be together in Running Man anymore but let’s be together for the rest of our lives,” Jung-kook even gifted Kwang-soo a hand-drawn portrait of the comedian.

HaHa said, “I feel like I will see you next week as well. It’s because you did your best and showed an incredible amount of effort that so many viewers are upset and as sad as we are.”

“It still doesn’t feel real to me, I think deep sadness will hit me and make me crumble when it hits me that you are no longer here,” Ji-hyo said. So-min added, “I’m really thankful that I got to know you during the time that is either short or long. I’m really thankful for the unforgettable memories.”

Lastly, Se-chan told Kwang-soo, “I’ll always miss you, think of you and feel empty. Now do everything you want to do in the world without penalties.”

It was then revealed that Kwang-soo succeeded his last hidden mission and that he can give his surprise gifts to his Running Man cast members.

In his final letter, Kwang-soo said, “The members helped me to get to where I am today. They feel like another family, and I am so, so grateful to them. I’m sorry again. I wasn’t always great in the past eleven years, but I always did my best.”

Running Man is a show where everyone without exception does their best and throws their whole bodies into filming. I ask that people continue to show more love and interest in the future,” he added.

Running Man is one of the most popular variety shows in South Korea and has a growing fan base in the Philippines. The cast members were supposed to visit the Philippines in February 2020 to celebrate the show’s 10th year, but their trip was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
