ICYMI, Neil Gaiman’s iconic comic book series The Sandman is getting a screen adaptation via Netflix, and the entertainment company announced the initial cast on Friday, January 29.

A pop culture favorite, The Sandman ran for 75 issues from 1989 to 1996. It follows the story of Dream (the titular Sandman, also known as Morpheus), the brooding ruler of the realm of the Dreaming. Dream is one of the 7 Endless – powerful beings who have been around since the dawn of time.

As the series ran on, it also introduced and told the stories of Dream’s siblings, the other Endless: Destiny, Death, Desire, Destruction, Despair, and Delirium.

Tony-nominated actor Tom Sturridge will be playing the main role of Dream, while Game of Thrones alum Gwendoline Christie will be playing Lucifer, ruler of hell.

The Witches‘ Vivienne Acheampong, is taking on the role of Lucienne, the head librarian of the Dreaming while another Game of Thrones star, Charles Dance, will be playing the sly magician Roderick Burgess.

Comedian Sanjeev Bhaskar and Black Mirror: Bandersnatch‘s Asim Chaudhry will be playing citizens of the Dreaming Cain and Abel, while Narcos‘ Boyd Holbrook is cast as The Corinthian, a nightmare who has escaped from the Dreaming and is wreaking havoc on earth.

Gaiman has signed on to write the series alongside Allan Heinberg, who will also serve as showrunner. David S. Goyer is serving as executive producer.

“For the last 33 years, the Sandman characters have breathed and walked around and talked in my head. I’m unbelievably happy that now, finally, they get to step out of my head and into reality,” Gaiman said.

“I can’t wait until the people out there get to see what we’ve been seeing as Dream and the rest of them take flesh, and the flesh belongs to some of the finest actors out there. This is astonishing, and I’m so grateful to the actors and to all of The Sandman collaborators – Netflix, Warner Bros., DC, to Allan Heinberg and David Goyer, and the legions of crafters and geniuses on the show – for making the wildest of all my dreams into reality,” he continued.

Netflix’s adaptation of The Sandman was first announced in 2019. A premiere date has yet to be set. – Rappler.com
