The CW is working on a ‘Powerpuff Girls’ live-action series
Diablo Cody and Heather Regnier will write and produce the show

The Powerpuff Girls going back on-screen and this time, it’ll be live-action.

On Tuesday, August 25 (Monday in the US), a spokesperson for the CW Network confirmed to People that the series is now in development.

The project will see the beloved characters – Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup — as grown-ups as they deal with the challenges of not having a normal childhood due to their crime-fighting days as kids.

The show’s description reads: “The Powerpuff Girls used to be America’s pint-sized superheroes. Now they’re disillusioned twenty-somethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting. Will they agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever?”

Diablo Cody, known for Juno and Jennifer’s Body, and Heather Regnier, whose body of work includes Veronica Mars, are among those on board to write and produce the show.

A date for the live-action series has yet to be announced.

The Powerpuff Girls cartoon, created by Craig McCracken, first aired in 1998 on the Cartoon Network and ran for 6 seasons before it ended in 2005. It tells the story of sisters Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, who were created by Professor Utonium as they protect the city of Townsville from evil forces.

A Powerpuff Girls movie was released in the US in 2002. In 2017, the Cartoon Network aired an original special introducing an older sister, Bliss. – Rappler.com
