Singer and actress Selena Gomez called out the show The Good Fight for making a “tasteless” joke about her 2017 kidney transplant.

Selena wrote via Twitter and Instagram on Wednesday, August 4 that she hopes “in the next writer’s room when one of these tasteless jokes are presented, it’s called out immediately and doesn’t make it on air.”

“I am not sure how writing jokes about organ transplants for television shows has become a thing but sadly it has apparently,” she added.

The joke was made on the fourth episode of season 5, which aired on July 17. One scene showed characters Marissa (Sarah Steele), Jay (Nyambi Nyambi), and Jim (Ifádansi Rashad) as they discuss “cancel culture” and what jokes should be off-limits.

The characters responded with “necrophilia,” “autism,” and “Selena Gomez’s kidney transplant.”

Fans of the Wizards of Waverly Place star took to social media to call the show out, which later prompted a response from Selena herself. It was followed by the 29-year-old saying her fans always have her back and posting a sign-up link to

It’s not the first time this has happened. In November 2020, an episode of the Saved By the Bell reboot also referenced the singer’s transplant surgery a couple of times. In one scene, two students argued whether it was Justin Bieber’s mom or Demi Lovato who was Gomez’s donor.

In another scene from the reboot, a school hallway scene showed the words “Does Selena Gomez even have a kidney?” scribbled on the wall. Gomez did not publicly address this incident.

Gomez underwent a kidney transplant in 2017 due to complications caused by lupus, an autoimmune disease. Her longtime friend, Francia Raisa (Grown-ish), was her donor.

Paramount+ and CBS Studios, the studios The Good Fight is produced under, has yet to issue a statements regarding the matter. The Good Fight is a legal drama series and spin-off sequel to The Good Wife. It is currently on its fifth season. – with reports from Angelica Burlaza/
