‘The Son of Good Fortune’ to be adapted into Amazon comedy series
The novel by Filipino-American author Tenorio follows an undocumented Filipino teenager living in America

MANILA, Philippines – A series adaptation of The Son of Good Fortune, a novel by Filipino-American author Lysley Tenorio, is in the works.

According to a Variety report on Thursday, December 2, actor Riz Ahmed and filmmaker Lulu Wang are teaming up to develop and produce the comedy series for Amazon. Additional details such as its cast members, episode count, and target release date have yet to be announced.

The Son of a Good Fortune follows an undocumented Filipino teenager named Excel, who tries to live a low-key American life after his former Filipino action star mom Maxima revealed that they’re “TNTs” (a term that refers to Filipinos in the US who are hiding from authorities because of their illegal immigrant status).

Excel then joins his girlfriend Sab on a sojourn to Hello City, a place that seemed to exist outside society’s constructs, where he gets the chance to redirect the course of his life.

Upon its debut, the novel was met with critical acclaim, winning the 2020 Institute for Immigration Research New American Voices Award. The Son of a Good Fortune was also a finalist for the 2021 Joyce Carol Oates Prize.

The adaptation marks a partnership between Ahmed’s Left Handed Films and Wang’s Local Time. Andrew Lopez will adapt the novel for the screen and serve as an executive producer while author Tenorio is listed as a consulting producer. – Rappler.com
