MANILA, Philippines – The big reveal Charice Pempengco made that changed her life will now be told in its fuller details on Saturday, August 10, in the GMA drama anthology, “Magpakailanman.”

From being a simple girl empowered by her big dreams, Charice went on to be a runner-up in a nationally televised singing contest.

On the way up, she was discovered by Ellen DeGeneres on YouTube, met with Oprah Winfrey and David Foster, and guested on “Glee” and became chummy with the late Cory Monteith.

She is now one of the most talked about Pinay singers worldwide.

But her coming out as a lesbian was a riskier disclosure than anyone would imagine.

That’s why the singer finally agreed to this dramatization of a crucial chapter in her life — the maturity of her person and sexual identity.

In this, she gave her trust to Mel Tiangco, the program’s host.

Charice also agreed to play the lead role in her own life story.

She has made cameo appearances in various programs, including “Magpakailanman’s” rival show, “Maaalala Mo Kaya.” But this is her first time to do some serious acting in a role that is, shall we say, close to her heart.

“Gusto ko kasing ipakita sa kanila na ito yung nararamdaman ko nung time na andami-daming bumabatikos sa akin, nung time na jina-judge nila ako.” (I want to show people that this is what I felt at the time I was being criticized and judged a lot.)

“Who can actually show that but me?

“We wanted [this presentation] to be balanced. Wala naman kaming intensyon na ipalabas na kahit anong magiging controversy or anything. Basta lahat ng ilalabas namin dito sa ‘Magpakailanman,’ totoo.” (It’s not our intention to play up a controversy or anything. Everything we’ll show in this program is true.)

“Many painful memories came back as I was shooting my scenes. But it only made me stronger. I knew that I made the right decision — this is me. It’s either you like me or you don’t.”

Charice said she made this decision to show her life story without consulting with her mother, Raquel Pempengco, with whom she is still at odds.

“Siyempre ang hirap magpaalam [Of course, it’s hard to let her know beforehand] because I know she’ll say ‘No.’ But I know it will be fine.

“Sa akin, ilalabas lang naman ‘tong istorya na ‘to hindi dahil gusto kong ilabas kung ano ang naging opinyon ni Mommy, hindi dahil gusto kong ilabas kung ano ang naging opinyon ni Alyssa [Quijano, her girlfriend].”

(As far as I’m concerned, we’re coming out with this story not because I want to present what became  Mommy’s opinions or Alyssa’s.)

Gusto kong ilabas na ito ang nangyari sa akin, ito yung nararamdaman ko, kung ano ang naging journey ko while nag-lie low ako, nanahimik ako. Para rin ito sa fans ko.”

(I just want to show, this is what happened to me, this is how I feel, this is my journey while I was keeping a low profile. This is also for my fans.)

“Medyo magfo-focus din ‘to sa love story namin ni Alyssa. Para maiba naman, di ba?” (This life story will also focus on my love story with Alyssa. So you have something different, di ba?)

“Although siyempre nandoon pa rin ang journey ko as an artist, sa career ko, and everything else.” (Of course, this is all about my journey as an artist, the story of my career, and everything else.)

This special episode titled “Magpakailanman: The Charice Pempengco Story” also stars Glydel Mercado, Ryza Cenon, and Jan Manual, and is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Maryo J. Delos Reyes (“Bagets,” “Diosa,” “Magnifico”).

On August 24, Charice will sing the US national anthem for the Major League Baseball Beacon Awards in Chicago. She will then fly to Germany for a series of shows and will return to Manila to release her new album. – Rappler.com
