MANILA, Philippines – Award-winning actress Eugene Domingo is happy to work again with Diamond Star Maricel Soriano.

It has been 6 years since their last project, “Bahay Kubo,” which secured for Marya and Uge (the nicknames of Maricel and Eugene) the best actress and best supporting actress awards at the 2007 Metro Manila Film Festival.

Now they star in “Momzillas,” a term popularized by a hit American novel and, in our context, the newest comedy by Viva Films and Star Cinema that opens on September 18.

Working with Maricel is something Eugene looks forward to because she loves how serious Marya is at work, yet she can be such a joy off-cam.

Eugene too is turning out to be among the most prolific performers in 2013.

Aside from her game show, “Celebrity Bluff,” she had two movies shown this year, “Tuhog” and “Instant Mommy,” and is about to release two more – “Kuwentong Barbero” and another Kimmy Dora film, “Kimmy Dora: The Prequel Kiyeme,” which will be shown at the Metro Manila Film Festival.

“Napakadaldal po ni Maricel Soriano. [She’s so talkative.] Kahit na sobrang ngarag na kaming lahat, siya ay patuloy ang talk show!” Uge laughs. (Even if we’re all tired, she’s still a talk show!)

“Naiisip ko tuloy na baka itong si Marya, eh, walang kausap sa bahay, kaya sa set niya dinadala ang mga kuwento na matagal na niyang gustong ilabas.”

(It occurred to me that Marya might have no one to talk to at home, so it’s in the set where she brings up those stories she wants to tell.)

“Pero biro lang ‘yon, alam ko na ganyan na kadaldal si Marya.” (But I’m just kidding. I know that Marya is that outgoing.)

“6 years ago noong una kaming nagkatrabaho ay para na siyang radyo.”

(We first worked together 6 years ago. She was already like a radio then.)

“Ngayon at nagkatrabaho kami ulit, para na siyang iPod na naka-loop at walang tigil.”

(Now that we’re together again, she’s looped in like an iPod, non-stop.)

“But in fairness, makabuluhan ang mga kuwento ni Marya.” (We learn a lot from her stories.)

“Lahat tungkol sa trabaho at pagpapahalaga sa career.” (It’s all about work and giving value to your career.)

“Kaya naman Diamond Star siya dahil dumaan sa mahabang panahon ang mga kinang niya.”

(No wonder she’s the Diamond Star, because she’s sparkled through the years.)

Adept comediennes

The Wenn Deramas comedy has the two stars as rival super-moms thriving on each other’s faux pas, until the contrived plot point of their isolation in an island.

It sounds like a facile storyline, but trust Wenn Deramas to whip up a full comedy with the help of her equally adept comediennes.

“Grabe ang comedy dito sa MomZillas.” said Uge. (The comedy in Momzillas is terrific.)

“Iba talaga kasama sa eksena si Marya. Kung hindi ka handa, lalamunin ka niya!”

(Marya is really something. If you’re not ready, she’ll devour you.)

“Bilang katrabaho at kaibigan naman niya, nandoon ang respeto ko kay Maricel Soriano.”

(As a colleague and friend, I have a deep respect for Maricel Soriano.)

“Pero siya na rin ang nagsabi na okey lang na masapawan ko siya dahil pelikula naman daw namin ito.”

(But she herself assures me that I can outshine her because this is both our film.)

Or the fancy term to outperform a co-actor is coup de théâtre.

“Eh di sinapawan ko nga!” Uge said, laughing. (And so I did!) – Rappler.com
