Dingdong Dantes back in teleserye action
MANILA, Philippines - Kapuso Primetime King Dingdong Dantes returns to teleserye action with "Genesis" on GMA-7.
By action, we don't just mean the standard high drama that fuels the serye genre. Because the high drama here goes full scale in an apocalyptic, politically charged setting. And the plot itself is unabashed, unapologetic melodrama - in the grand tradition of Laurice Guillen, Lorna Tolentino, Robert Arevalo, and Jackie Lou Blanco, some of the stars in this serye.
Dingdong portrays the role of Isaak Salvacion, a morally upright officer whose career and romance (with his great love Raquel Hernandez, portrayed by Rhian Ramos) become disrupted by treacherous circumstances. Then he rises anew to become a trusted ally of Philippine President Sandra Trinidad (portrayed by Lorna Tolentino) tasked with a crucial mission, "Operation: Genesis."
Playing equally vital roles as the antagonists in this serye are versatile actor TJ Trinidad as the oppressive Paolo de Guzman, whom Raquel is forced to marry, and seasoned actress Jackie Lou Blanco as the cruel, manipulative former president Ramona Escalabre.
Others in this powerhouse cast are Irma Adlawan, Ronnie Henares, Carlo Gonzalez, Betong Sumaya, Luane Dy, Sasha Baldoza, Rainier Gison, and Annette Samin.
The serye also features the special participation of veteran and rising performers Robert Arevalo, Bembol Roco, Gardo Versoza, Snooky Serna, Sharmaine Centenera-Buencamino, Mark Anthony Fernandez, Angel Aquino, Pauleen Luna, Lauren Young, Lito Legaspi, and actress-filmmaker Laurice Guillen.
'Like a feature film'
Dingdong finds this "probably the biggest series I’ve done so far with GMA-7. I am very thankful that they’ve entrusted me with this expensive teleserye.
“We promise viewers that they will see something different. Yung pilot episode na lang namin, parang pelikula na [Our pilot episode is already like a feature film].”
The serye is quite a departure for film-TV director Joyce Bernal (co-directing this series with Mark Reyes). Apart from occasional diversions like the suspense thriller "Segunda Mano" (2011), Direk Joyce is often associated with rom-coms and other light comedies like "Kimmy Dora" and "Bakit Hindi Ka Crush ng Crush Mo?" (2013). Yet she also has another project along the lines of "Genesis" - Robin Padilla's return to action in "10,000 Hours."
"Genesis" also marks Dingdong's professional reunion with Lorna T (after "Pahiram ng Sandali" of 2012) and with Rhian, with whom he was first paired in the local adaptation of the Koreanovela "Stairway To Heaven" (2009).
“We were supposed to work again in 'My Beloved,'" the Kapuso star told a contributor for Rappler. "Pero biglang may mga pangyayari na hindi maiwasan kaya napalitan siya." (But things happened that we couldn't avoid so she was replaced.)
"My Beloved" is a 2012 romantic-thriller serye in which Dingdong was eventually paired with his girlfriend Marian Rivera.
“Now, natuloy ulit kami [Rhian and I are back together in a new project] and I really miss working with Rhian. Mas mature na siya ngayon [She's more mature now] and still a very good actress.”
Asked about Marian's thoughts about this project, Dingdong said, “Alam niya ang project na ito at hindi naman siya nakikialam sa kung sino ang maka-partner ko." (She doesn't interfere with regards to whoever becomes my partner.)
“Gano’n din naman ako [Same with me]. I don’t have to approve kung sino ang makakasama niya sa next teleserye niya [who she'll appear with in her next teleserye].
