Actor's career thrives, but love remains a many-splendored thing

MANILA, Philippines – Kapamilya actor Jake Cuenca is having a blast in 2013. He has 6 film credits for the year and is also currently in the ABS-CBN teleserye “Maria Mercedes.”

But Jake wants to take a break in December and plans to travel to Spain where he hopes to spend his 25th birthday on December 30.

Yet all is well at work, thanks to “Maria Mercedes” Jessy Mendiola, whom Jake is rumored to be courting.

Jake said he and Jessy go out if they have time.

“We are both busy with our respective projects so we really don’t have time,” he said at a recent press conference. “We can go out if the taping finishes early. I am already happy with the time we spend together. We enjoy each other’s company at work. Our show is doing very well. Jessy is also evolving. She’s also doing a movie and I am also busy doing 3 movies right now.”

‘No problem with Sam’

Jake is surely aware that Sam Milby is going out with Jessy. “I have no problem with Sam. He’s a good friend of mine. We have different styles of courting because we are two different men.”

Jake’s past relationships were also with fellow stars, but none of them have worked out.

“You may have a successful relationship with someone but still not end up together,” he said. “But whatever relationship I’ve had with anyone, whether that person gets mad at me or we become good friends, I don’t have any regrets. I’ve loved all of them and I hope all of them felt that. Sometimes things work, sometimes it doesn’t.”

With regards to Lovi Poe whom he used to date, Jake said he and Lovi are friends, although that episode taught him, he said, to be more cautious about getting into another relationship.

“The moving-on process after Lovi took time. It took quite a while and I did undergo some adjustments since I [couldn’t get over that] relationship. At the end of the day, I am happy because Lovi and I have remained friends. I have no ill feelings about her and I wish her well. If she would meet someone who could make her happy, fine and good.”

There’s still a gray area about what he and Lovi had going between them, but not for Jake who grew up in the States and is more candid in his outlook. “Even if I didn’t put a label to it, I still consider that a relationship,” he said. “I gave it my time and attention.”

Back to Jessy

Jake would rather take it nice and easy, as the song goes, when it comes to courting Jessy.

“We’re both not in a hurry to get into a relationship, since she also came from a previous relationship, so I am also [biding my time],” he said.

But Jake said he feels lucky to be spending a lot of time with Jessy as her co-star in “Mercedes.” He finds this an advantage, but one that he doesn’t wish to exploit, he said.

“If it happens that Jessy and I become together, I’d be the happiest man.”

In his many film projects for 2013, Jake has increasingly shown his diversity as an actor – playing a guerrilla caught in a gay relationship in “Lihis,” a different, contemptible anti-hero in “Nuwebe,” and gearing up the melodrama in “When the Love Has Gone,” Viva Films’ variation on Danny Zialcita’s classic “Nagalit ang Buwan sa Haba ng Gabi.” His career in cinema is thriving and it is hoped that everything goes well too in “Maria Mercedes.” – Rappler.com
