These 5 stars compete for love, power in sexy drama ‘Los Bastardos’
The new 'Precious Hearts Romance Presents' series tackles the lives of 5 illegitimate sons

MANILA, Philippines – Jake Cuenca, Diego Loyzaga, Marco Gumabao, Albie Casiño, and Joshua Colet heat up the afternoon with ABS-CBN’s new sexy drama, Los Bastardos, the latest book in the Precious Hearts Romance Presents series.

Each confident in their own body, the leading men revealed that they had no problems showing a bit of skin on national television.

“The face of the show is really 5 bastards (Ed’s note: “Bastards” here refers to illegitimate sons) with nice bodies so for us, if the show needs it, then we’re really privileged to be part of it,” Marco explained during the press conference for Los Bastardos.

“Actually sobrang laking karangalan na kami ‘yung napili, na-appreciate ‘yung mga katawan namin for the show and kung ‘yun ang kailangan naming gawin then okay lang.”

(It’s honestly a huge honor for us to have been chosen, to be appreciated for our physiques in the show and if need to do certain scenes, then it’s okay.)

Despite being dubbed as a “sexy drama,” the cast insisted that there is definitely more that viewers can expect from Los Bastardos. Coming from the same creative team as Wildflower, viewers can look forward to a strong storyline and solid acting from the cast.

MATEO. Marco Gumabao sheds his boy next door image to play Mateo in the show.

Meron kaming mga hubad na scenes but it’s not just about showing off our bodies. It still is acting at the end of the day,” Diego added.

(There are scenes where we’re naked but it’s not just about showing off our bodies. It still is acting at the end of the day.)

Ritz Azul, one of the leading ladies on the show, added that since it’s still on national television, there are still going to be limitations as to how sexy they could go. She, however, also had no issues showing a bit off skin.

For her, it’s all about being confident in the body you’ve been given.

(We’re willing to show what we have. Seriously, for us woman, sometimes our strength is shown off that way. Our stength becomes apparent in our confidence. For me, sexiness is confidence. And that’s what we want to show viewers.)

BACK ON TV. Ritz Azul plays Diego Loyzaga's leading lady.

Los Bastardos tells the story of 5 brothers who must fight against each other for the right to the power and money of the Cardinal family, led by its patriarch, Don Roman Cardinal, played by veteran actor Ronaldo Valdez.

Inspired by real-life events, Vanessa, author of the original novel, explained that she wanted to give a different flavor to the usual romance genre by telling the story from the male perspective. By deviating away from the boy-next-door type of leading men, Vanessa also wanted to show viewers that there is more than meets the eye for these 5 “bastards.”

“‘Yung nagiging bida sa romance po kasi laging ‘yung mga heroes. Gusto ko rin po dito na mapakita sa bawat characer na ‘yung mga mahirap mahalin na bida, ‘yun po ‘yung mamahalin ng mga readers,” she explained.

(The leads in most romances are heroes. I also wanted to show through these characters, leads that are hard to love – so the readers learn to love them too.)

Diego was asked if there was hesitation on his end to accept the role.

“There’s no problem there. Tulad nga ng sinabi natin kaya nga nabuo ‘yung story na ‘to because the reality to it is there is really a lot of people who are bastards out there, who do go through these walks in life. I’m with direk Digo [Ricio], it’s not about the women this time. It’s about the guys. The struggles of what guys have to go through from different walks of life. What’s wrong with it? Nothing. For me, it’s good. I’m happy na ako ‘yung isang napili to be one of the bastards, to show my walk of life being a bastard. I’m happy to be here.”

On preparing for Los Bastardos

As soon as they accepted the role, Jake, Diego, Marco, Albie, and Joshua all knew that they needed to work on their physiques. Diego recalled that he had quite a few bashers when he walked the Bench Under the Stars fashion show last year unprepared.

This time around, the actor teased that viewers will not be disappointed.

“I made myself better. I wanted to become fit for this role. Sobrang excited akong ipakita ‘yung pinaghirapan ko. Everyday, I dieted, I worked out. I really worked hard for this and apart from acting classes I did the gym, MMA training. I worked hard and I want to show it off, why not?” he said.

SHAPING UP. Albie Casino is Lucas in the show.

As for Jake, it’s all about the character. He got lean when he played a triathlete on Ikaw Lang Ang Iibigin and now he was asked to be in the “best of shape of his life” and he delivered.

Para maging mga alpha male kailangan din talaga ‘yung katawan mo magmukhang alpha din. ‘Yun yung nagiging requirement sa show.

(To play an alpha male, your body has to look alpha too. That’s the show’s requirement.)

After his successful stint on The Blood Sisters, Jake is grateful for the chance to lead his own series again. According to the actor, working with Diego, Marco, Albie, and Joshua – who had been involved in controversies in the past – made him feel right at home.

ISAGANI. Jake Cuenca takes on the role of Isagani, the eldest of the 5 men.

One way or another lahat kami nalagay sa controversy. In some way, nalagay kami sa ‘di magandang sitwasyon sa career namin pero sobrang nagpapasalamat ako sa RSB dahil nilagay nila ako sa isang show na kasama ko mga katulad ko, mga kauri kong artista. To work with Diego, Albie, Joshua, Marco sobrang I feel like I belong in this show,” he said.  – Rappler.com
