Reality show ‘The People’s Queen’ will be available on iflix
The show stars 5 aspiring queens who undergo training to win a crown

MANILA, Philippines – The People’s Queen, the show which tackles the journey of 5 aspiring beauty queens, will now be available to online viewers in Southeast Asia  through iflix this April.

Georgette Tengco, Head of Content and Marketing of iflix Philippines, said in a press statement that the show is expected to resonate with viewers in the Philippines, known as a country of pageant lovers.

The People’s Queen is a show that will resonate well with the Philippine audience, especially with the recent slew of Filipinas bringing home the crown. It has become a source of pride and ray of hope for our country. We are all curious to see what truly makes a beauty queen. Offering shows like this is part of iflix’s direction towards delivering localized content to each of our markets,” she said.

Slay Models Management director Cecilio Asuncion and Rappler contributing writer and beauty pageant expert Voltaire Tayag mentor the ladies in the show.

“The pageant community is looking to redefine its role in an era of female empowerment and gender equality,” Asuncion said.

Tayag, for his part, said, “In order to triumph, pageant contestants are required to dig deep within their souls, confront unresolved personal issues, and overcome self-doubt.” (Rappler Talk Entertainment: Voltaire Tayag on what it takes to win a crown)

Asuncion said that “pageant queens were never born, they’ve always been made.”

“Where we used to build a queen with external makeovers, it’s internal transformations that win titles today. It’s simply not enough to be a beauty queen anymore. Pageant hopefuls must strive to be The People’s Queen,” she added.

First aired in October in the US, The People’s Queen chronicled the journey of 5 ladies – Katarina Rodriguez, Katrina Dimaraan, Nikita McElroy,Jenny Levy, and Michelle Thorlund.

Three of them – Rodriguez, Thorlund, and Dimaraan – have competed in past pageants. Rodriguez previously competed and won as a runner-up in Asia’s Next Top Model and 1st runner-up in Miss Intercontinental. She once again tried and won Miss World Philippines.

Dimaraan meawhile competed in Binibining Pilipinas in 2012 and won Bb Pilipinas Tourism but wasn’t able to compete. She then move to the US and was later designated as Miss Supranational USA 2018. She was 1st runner-up in the Miss Supranational competition in Poland in December 2018.

Thorlund previously competed in Mutya ng Pilipinas 2016, where she won Mutya ng Pilipinas-Overseas Communities. – Rappler.com
