WATCH: The first teaser trailer for HBO’s ‘Watchmen’
MANILA, Philippines – The first teaser trailer for the upcoming HBO series Watchmen was released on May 8, showing a take on the classic comic that we haven’t seen before.
The teaser starts off with vigilante killer Rorshach, who appears to lead a bigger group of Rorschachs – and they seem to be gearing up for an important operation.
The series is based on the comic written by Alan Moore and drawn by Dave Gibbons, considered by many to be one of the most important pieces of literature ever made.
Previous adaptations of the comic include a 2009 Zack Snyder film that, while mostly faithful to the source material, was met with mixed reactions.
The series however will not be a direct adaptation of the comic. According to the HBO site, the series, like the comic, is “set in an alternate history where ‘superheroes’ are treated as outlaws.”
It added, however, that “Watchmen embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel of the same name while attempting to break new ground of its own.”
Showrunner Damon Lindelof explained further in an open letter to Watchmen fans posted on his Instagram in May 2018.
In the letter he said: “We have no desire to ‘adapt’ the 12 issues Mr. Moore and Mr. Gibbons created 30 years ago. Those issues are sacred ground and they will not be retread nor recreated nor reproduced nor rebooted.”
“They will, however be remixed. Because the bass lines in those familiar tracks are just too good and we’d be fools not to sample them. Those original 12 issues are our Old Testament. When the New Testament came along, it did not erase what came before.”
He clarified that the series will not be a sequel.
“This story will be set in the world its creators painstakingly built…but in the tradition of the work that inspired it, this new story must be original. It has to vibrate with the seismic unpredictability of its own tectonic plates. It must ask new questions and explore the world though a fresh lens. Most importantly, it must be contemporary,” he said.
The cast of HBO’s Watchmen is led by Regina King, Jeremy Irons, and Don Johnson. HBO has not given an exact release date, but said that the series will premiere in fall 2019. – Rappler.com
