WATCH: Alyssa is all alone in the ‘The End of The Fucking World’ season 2 trailer

MANILA, Philippines – The first season of The End of the F***ing World ended on quite the cliffhanger – and if the second season trailer is anything to go by, the outlook is grim for the two teenage runaways James (Alex Lawther) and Alyssa (Jessica Barden).

In the first season, James, a self-proclaimed psychopath, picks out his schoolmate Alyssa to be his first human kill, but as the two run away from home and go on a catastrophic and criminal road trip across England, they eventually fall in love, proving that James is not a psychopath after all. By the end of the season, the police have caught up with James and Alyssa, and the final season shows James running on an empty beach to distract the officers from Alyssa. A gunshot fires, and the cuts fades to black, leaving viewers to wonder if James is alive or dead.

All signs seem to point to the latter. A poster released earlier in October shows Alyssa in a wedding dress at a diner, sitting across an urn.

The new trailer builds on that image even more. It focuses on Alyssa, who seems to be living a new life: struggling with work as a waitress, trying on a wedding dress, and eventually walking down the aisle as the bride – but who’s the groom?

All the while, a somber version of Billy Idol’s “White Wedding” plays as we see snippets of Alyssa’s flashbacks, including a glimpse of James lying on the beach, bleeding from his gut – an apparent continuation of the season 1 finale. The last shot of the trailer shows a bullet with “James” engraved on it. Is James really dead?

We are also introduced to a new character named Bonnie (Naomi Ackie), whose role in the story isn’t apparent in the trailer just yet, but according to Netflix, she’s “an outsider with a troubled past and a mysterious connection to Alyssa.” WHO IS SHE?

Writer Charlie Covell returns to write the second series of the show, which was inspired by characters from the award-winning graphic novel by Charles Forsman. Directors Lucy Forbes and Destiny Ekaragha will be at the helm of the season’s first and second block respectively, while Blur’s Graham Coxon returns to write and perform original songs and score.
