(UPDATED) The city partners with DENR after several sitios experienced severe flooding

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan joined forces with DENR Central Visayas Regional Executive Director Paquito Melicor Jr to map out a forest land use plan (FLUP) which would guard mangrove areas in the city and prevent severe flooding.

They signed Tuesday, November 24, the memorandum of agreement (MOA) sealing their partnership in protecting mangroves.

Chan reached out to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources after several sitios in the city recently suffered heavy flooding.

The DENR’s official website said forest land use plan (FLUP) is a document which certifies the allocation and use of forests and forestlands as natural resource assets.

Dunay mga lugar, malipat ta, sa una fishpond, kalit lang tambakan, mahimong dry land, unya magsuffer ang mga tao tungod kay mo resulta ngadto sa baha”, said Chan said during the MOA signing.

(There are places, we don’t notice, that were first fishponds. Suddenly dumped, becomes dry land, and then later the people suffer because it would result in flooding)

The formulation of the plan was initiated by the city government and DENR, through City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) officer Roderico Tagaan and City Planning Development Office (CPDO) officer Perla Amar.

Earlier in August, the city said it would address severe flooding in Sitio Tungdon and Tanke. The City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Offices of Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue were able to de-clog the drainage systems in these areas.

To better combat flooding in all barangays, the city government has tapped barangay captains and sitio officials.

Kaning inyohang gihimo matag barangay, para makahibalo ang CENRO Lapu-Lapu, ang zoning, kung unsa gihimo diha, unya i-report dayon nato ngadto sa DENR ug region”, said Mayor Chan in a press release.

(These [policieis] you made in each barangay, for the information of CENRO Lapu-Lapu, the zoning, whatever you made there, report it immediately to DENR and region)

Chan said that the plan would be effective in managing the island’s mangrove areas. If left unchecked, the destruction of mangrove areas would impede the flow of rainwater, triggering flooding.

“We will always be there, the CENRO is the frontline here if you have problems or concerns,” said Melicor. – Rappler.com
