How do we stop the spread of false information and its damaging impact on our democracy?
As Filipinos have witnessed in recent years, disinformation can drown out facts and divert public attention from important issues. The May 2022 elections also showed how social media was used to spread false information and propaganda, in an attempt to boost certain candidates and discredit their rivals.
This can be especially troubling for a nation like the Philippines, called a petri dish for information operations. Purveyors of false information can potentially drum up support for unpopular policies, or silence opponents.
How can Filipinos help determine the truth in an online landscape saturated with disinformation? Why is fact-checking critical to good governance?
To answer these questions and more, Rappler’s civic engagement arm MovePH has been leading a series of fact-checking webinars. These webinars aim to train participants to understand the current online landscape, spot disinformation online, and combat it.
We invite you to join our next co-hosted fact-checking webinar session, set for Friday, June 17, at 4 pm.
Speakers include Rappler head of community Jules Guiang, Rappler researcher-writer Loreben Tuquero, and UNESCO consultant Rowena Carranza Paraan.
